If you've never paddled the St. Marks or Wakulla, here's the one tip that changes your whole day: start against the current. Head out upriver first while you're fresh, and the paddle back is the easy part, current doing some of the work for you instead of fighting you home when you're tired.

A few other things worth knowing before you go. Mornings tend to cover more ground than afternoons once the day heats up, so plan your turnaround time, not just your distance. Keep your life jacket on, not strapped to the deck, it only works if it's on you. And bring more water and sun cover than you think you need, there's no shade out on open water.

Kayaks and paddle boards rent out of Shields, and the fleet goes fast on nice days, so call ahead before you drive out.

Great Loop and ICW cruisers have been finding their way to St. Marks for a long time, and it's rarely an accident. They plan for it.

Pulling in off Apalachee Bay, a transient crew gets protected dockage up to 65', a fuel dock, a service center, and a parts department, all at one address.

That's been the job here since 1952, same address. Transient space is finite though, so if St. Marks is on your route, call or email ahead before you're underway.

Cooler mornings mean redfish season is on, and it's a good time to run through your gear before you point the boat down the St. Marks toward the bay.

Life jackets for everyone aboard, sized right, not just stuffed under a seat. Signaling gear in case you need it. Terminal tackle and leader checked for the day you're actually fishing, not the last trip. And live bait if you're working the flats.

Our ship store is 6,000 square feet on your way to the water, so it's one stop to close any gaps instead of finding out what's missing once you're at the ramp. What's in the bait tanks changes day to day, so call ahead if bait is the thing that makes or breaks your trip.

Tight lines out there this fall.

There's something about the river once the air turns cool. The tannic water goes still, the cypress line up quiet on both banks, and a weekday morning out there feels like it belongs to you alone.

You don't need a rod in the holder to make it worth the early alarm. Sometimes fall on the St. Marks and Wakulla is reason enough on its own.

If you're in Wakulla County or Tallahassee, this is the stretch to get out early for. Who's headed out this week?

A lot of boat owners end up running four different stops just to keep a boat going: one place to store it, another for fuel, somewhere else for parts, and a shop across town when something breaks. We built Shields the other way around.

Everything sits on one property at 95 Riverside Drive. Dry and wet storage, a fuel dock, a 6,000 square foot ship store, a marine parts counter, and a full service center, all in the same footprint off the St. Marks River. Fuel up, grab the part you need, and have the service team look at it before you ever leave the property.

That's not new. It's how this marina has worked since 1952, and it's a big part of why owners consolidate here instead of splitting their boating life across town. The crew knows these boats and this river because they've been dealing with both, together, for a long time.

If your boat's currently scattered across a few different addresses, we'd be glad to talk through what moving it all under one roof looks like.

Fall redfish season is turning on out on the flats, and the bait that's working changes week to week. Before you hitch up and head for the ramp, swing by the ship store counter and ask the crew what's in the tanks that day, plus what leader and terminal tackle folks are having luck with lately.

Open Tuesday through Sunday, 7am to 7pm, closed Mondays, at 95 Riverside Drive. Call ahead if you want to check on bait before you leave the house, save yourself a guessing game at the ramp.

Take a look at Riverside Drive sometime and you'll notice the buildings all sit back from the water, up on wide stairs and porches. That's not architecture for style, it's a river village that floods, and it's built the way it's built for a reason.

Worth remembering, it's also just a good spot to stand still for an hour.

If you're up in Tallahassee and looking for an easy afternoon, come down, get some local seafood, and watch the boats go by. Nothing to buy, nothing to plan around. Just the river doing what it's done here for a long time.
