Any investment in piano should start with a conversation. “What are you looking to get out of your piano?”

Your technician should have a sense of how to best serve you and your piano, otherwise they are approaching the job without any parameters or greater perspective.

Presto Piano Service got to see Portland, Washington D.C. and NYC this year to connect with many folks in the industry. Played some Bechstein, Fazioli, Hailun and some other brands/models these ears and fingers had not yet been aquatinted. I’ve met dynamic and interesting clients, while servicing a few hundred pianos. Some clients brought me to near tears through telling their personal story, while with others (many) I’ve shared some gut busting laughs.

We’ve experienced 200% growth over the course of the year, compared to year 1. Looking forward to sustaining that growth in 2024!

The knowledge gained has been significant. Becoming involved with the Piano Technicians Guild (PTG), attending local chapter meetings as well as the national PTG conference, connecting with local mentors and staying up to date with other technicians online has sustained the learning and continued education.

I care about the work I do, and especially connecting with incredible people. The fact that I have the opportunity to meet and talk with creative, like-minded folks on the daily will never be taken for granted.

I love pianos. I love music. I love self-expression. That’s what this is all about.

One client said it succinctly. While gesturing to her piano, “This is where I go when I feel sad. And this is where I go when I feel happy.” 🥹

Had a service call for a clicking key today. When there is clicking the issue is commonly due to some felt or cushion missing - glue gave way and the piece fell off. This was precisely the problem for this Mason & Hamlin. Determined the jack was clicking and saw the felt button cushion in the wi**en was missing. Found it “playin hooky” at the bottom of the keybed. Glued it back on and it’s performing well again!

Unpopular opinion: Free pianos are not free. There are inherent costs involved with obtaining and maintaining these free pianos. Sure, they’re not all horrible, but there are additional logistics to consider when getting a piano that has not been serviced in a long time.

I offer advising services for folks looking to upgrade or purchase a new (or new to them) piano. Aspiring students can increase their capacity and skills on an instrument that serves them more fully in terms of playing dynamics, consistent feel, and better tuning stability.

If you ARE considering a free piano - hire a technician to inspect the piano before you invest in the piano move and initial tuning only to find out there are structural issues, tuning instability, and a whole load of necessary maintenance work to perform in order to get the piano back into proper playing form.

A success story! Last year this piano travelled from Wyoming (a dry climate) and currently lives in an old house with questionable humidity control. In November I tuned and installed a climate control system. The owner takes great care to keep a consistent climate for the benefit of their beloved piano.

This appointment was wonderful - just what a tuner likes to see - the first 5 1/2 octaves needed an adjustment of less than 1 cent. That’s extremely minute. Happy to see this piano in good health and the tuning held up well. I floated the pitch since it was sitting a bit high (A442.5) due to high humidity. It will likely come back down as winter settles in. Happy client, happy tech. Cheers to a great life.

I had a phenomenal experience at the Piano Technicians Guild Convention in Arlington, VA this past week. The energy was palpable. There was ample knowledge, laughter, and great hangs shared between colleagues and instructors alike. I consistently feel so thankful for finding an industry that is such a great fit for me. Just a bunch of music nerds that are even bigger tool nerds 🥴 there are so many special tools in piano technology, so what an appropriate place for me to land! I picked up some new tools at the exhibition hall, but refrained from splurging (at that time) on some other dream tools. They’ll find their way to my arsenal soon enough 😉 looking forward to the annual national convention in Reno next year!

MUSIC MATTERS. Our universal language. We’re all aware of the positive impact music can offer. Today’s luncheon put on by MacPhail Center for Music reconfirmed this for the 1,000+ folks that were present to support music education.

Providing access to quality music education while supporting youth in schools that are deprived of music engagement is especially vital to a healthy community.

WE can reach the masses and change the future for youth across our state and nation. Thanks to the foundation and all supporters of MacPhail Center for Music as well as music education advocates. We make change happen!
