Norovirus is that icky illness we often call the stomach flu (it is not actually the flu). Symptoms include sudden, severe vomiting, watery diarrhea, and stomach cramps. If you get the norovirus illness, you can shed billions of norovirus particles that you can’t see without a microscope. It only takes a few norovirus particles to make you and other people sick.

Harmful Blue-Green Algae Blooms (filamentous cyanobacteria) have been in the news. Sadly, in some cases, there have been animal deaths.

Blooms season occurs during the following:
-Warm temperatures (68–86°F)
-High phosphorus concentrations
-Calm, stable water columns which means little mixing
-Long daylight hours

Stay out of the water if you see signs of Blue-Green Algae.

Once conditions are right, the cyanobacteria can multiply quickly. While there are algicides that can help reduce the severity of these blooms, nutrient management is key and is the only way to provide long-lasting results. You may want to start now before the water body gets too far out of balance.

A planting crew for the Floating Islands in Caldwell Pond figured out a more efficient way to plant their islands. They used a pop bottle to push a planting medium down into the holes before adding plant plugs and packing them in to make them more secure. After growing for two weeks under sprinklers, they launched two islands into the pond.
