The American Academy of Pediatrics has updated their guidance on breastfeeding to be more in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) guidance. Great news for public health and families!

“Your breast milk continues to change to meet the nutritional needs of your growing child. It provides crucial immunities, enzymes and vitamins that your child may not get from solid foods, ensuring he or she is as healthy as possible. Breast milk can also be a cure-all for many bugs your child may catch, especially if he or she is sharing germs with other kids at daycare or on play dates.”

The benefits of breast-feeding beyond infancy for a child include:

✨Balanced nutrition. Breast milk is considered the gold standard for infant nutrition. There's no known age at which breast milk is considered to become nutritionally insignificant for a child.

✨Boosted immunity. As long as you breast-feed, the cells, hormones and antibodies in your breast milk will continue to bolster your child's immune system.

The benefits of breast-feeding beyond infancy for a mother include:

✨Reduced risk of certain illnesses. Breast-feeding for 12 months or more cumulatively in life has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes.

“Breast milk continues to provide substantial amounts of key nutrients well beyond the first year of life, especially protein, fat, and most vitamins.”

Studies done in rural Bangladesh have shown that breastmilk continues to be an important source of vitamin A in the second and third year of life.
— Persson 1998

“Human milk in the second year postpartum contained significantly higher concentrations of total protein, lactoferrin, lysozyme and Immunoglobulin A, than milk bank samples, and significantly lower concentrations of zinc, calcium, iron and oligosaccharides.”
— Perrin 2016

Breastfeeding toddlers between the ages of one and three have been found to have fewer illnesses, illnesses of shorter duration, and lower mortality rates (Mølbak 1994, van den Bogaard 1991, Gulick 1986).

A couple of studies have shown a positive relationship between longer breastfeeding duration and social development.

NEEDY BABIES

Babies have needs, you don't make them needier by fulfilling them!

If we have a need to cool down, opening the window does not make us hotter. If we are scared, speaking with somebody to help calm us down doesn't make us more scared. If we are hungry, eating dinner doesn't make us hungrier. Why do we presume that the needs that babies have operate entirely differently?

If babies are scared or lonely, holding them does not make them more likely to be scared or more likely to get lonely in the future. Needs that are met will ultimately fade.

If a need exists surely the most sensible answer is to fulfil it if possible. There is no logic in the idea that ignoring a need makes it go away!

If a baby needs comfort from his or her parents when s/he wakes then fulfilling this need doesn't make the baby more likely to be 'needy' when they are a toddler, or older child. The needs will fade in time and the best way to decrease them is to meet them when they occur if possible.

When somebody says "we responded to our baby and picked him up whenever he cried and now he's two and he still needs us, we should have ignored him" I always think "but why do you think your response created the need now? What if he would have been ten times worse if you had ignored his needs as a baby?". This of course doesn't even take into account the fact that it is entirely normal for children to need their parents to feel calm and safe for many years!

If your baby has a need, especially a need for you, the very best response you can have is to meet their need, knowing that you aren't "creating problems for yourself" later! In fact, the more you meet your child's needs now, the more research has found that your child will grow to be happy, confident, independent and secure!

Amazing stuff!

Genius!! I always loved the flow of milk once it finally started, but getting the was filled with angst.
Can you relate? Do you think this would help you?

Are you someone who sits and watches the trickle of milk, if any, that comes when pumping? Do you get stressed or sad about your output?

When I was told to pump after feeding to boost supply, I'd sit there and watch. I'd double pump for twenty minutes after ever feed, and become more and more demoralised at the lack of milk in that bottle. I realised that, for my own mental health, I needed to stop watching! Easier said than done. Enter the baby sock.

Now I advise mamas to put a sock over their pumping bottle, and it has been getting incredible results. Some women are reporting often 2-3 times more milk when they remove themselves mentally from the result of their pumping session! We know that oxytocin release is inhibited by stress, and oxytocin release is required for letdowns, so if you find you are getting stressed while watching, try it!

If you ever doubt your body’s greatness remember the things it has done. I still don’t fully believe it every time I see it because it is so damn spectacular. We. Are. Phenomenal.
