Great coverage from MPR on the Operating Engineers’ Sandbox for high school students! Proud to see the Port Authority, Saint Paul Public Schools, IUOE Local 49, and many other partners come together to make this possible. Students are getting hands‑on experience with heavy equipment and exploring high‑demand career pathways. We believe this will be a very popular pathway to success.

Saint Paul Public School seniors are learning to operate heavy equipment in an outdoor classroom that school leaders say is the first of its kind in the Twin Cities.

Great things are happening in Saint Paul! 🎉

So proud to be part of the Sandbox celebration!

This innovative space opens doors for more young people by providing hands‑on experience, real‑world skills, and a clear pathway to long, successful careers operating heavy machinery. We were honored to play a role by providing the land that helps make these opportunities possible.

We are grateful to all the partners, especially the Saint Paul Public Schools SPPS and IUOE Local 49, for seeing the potential and opportunity, and coming together to make it a reality.

DID YOU KNOW…
SPPA purchases contaminated or blighted properties and transforms them into productive uses that benefit Saint Paul?

Here’s an example…

After 60 years as a coke foundry, the Koppers site had significant soil and groundwater contamination. In 1983, it was designated a SuperFund site by the US Environmental Protection Agency, and later that year, SPPA was engaged to clean up the site and lead the effort to transform the property. What was once deemed an environmental risk is now one of Saint Paul's most productive neighborhoods: Energy Park!

A 200-acre mixed-use development, today Energy Park is home to:
>> 93 companies
>> 5,770 jobs
>> 780+ housing units
>> $8.5 million in property tax revenue flowing back to Saint Paul every year

This is what brownfield cleanup makes possible. Reclaimed land. Revitalized communities. A stronger tax base for everyone.

We commissioned a new analysis of the economic impact and value of Saint Paul’s industrial sector to answer a timely and critical question…

What is the value of Saint Paul’s industrial land?

The findings are clear: industrial land plays an essential role as both an economic engine and the fiscal backbone of the city.
