This rare Meissen Pug Model bears the initials of Maria Josepha and was likely created bespoke for the Polish court. In the 18th century, pugs became symbols of aristocratic culture and devotion, with many Meissen animal models inspired by the real companion dogs of European nobility. Master modeler Johann Joachim Kändler even recorded dogs “painted from nature in the most accurate manner” within his work journals.
