“We think there’s an incredible opportunity to build the emerging tech power base for the region. The Science Center will act as a docking station for artificial intelligence and other emerging tech projects that impact education, careers, philanthropy, economic development, thought leadership, policymaking and whatever opportunities present themselves in the realm of AI.”

Some details are still on the drawing board, and there are Ts to be crossed and Is to be dotted, but the Science Center will rise again.

Last of three parts Like virtually all nonprofits, the Science Center took a bad financial hit during the recession of 2008 and 2009. Where have all the mangoes gone? What appears to be a simple question, more accurately, has a complex answer. Sarah-Jane Vatelot (author + architect) embarked upon an eight-month-long study for her master’s thesis to uncover the impact Tropicana Field had on an entire community during the late 1980s early 1990s. What she found was three African American neighborhoods displaced due to an economic obstacle in the shape of a baseball stadium. What once was a pocket of the city made up of 500 households, 30+ businesses, 13 churches, and land rich with mangoes and other fruit trees, had been reduced to a multi-million-dollar sports complex. ⁣

Sarah-Jane hopes her master’s thesis will challenge the way we think about development and its consequences. Sometimes building new walls can cause invaluable, existing walls to be torn down – creating a chasm in time. ⁣⁣
