So sad. Please do your part

Nest 17 hatched last night—but instead of traveling towards the ocean, these hatchlings went straight back into the dunes, directly towards some of the lights in the houses behind them. We lost the majority of the turtles that emerged last night.

Property owners: PLEASE help us keep our beach dark! There is an existing Glynn County ordinance that governs beach lighting from May-October on St. Simons and Sea Island, requiring you to shield or turn off all beach-facing lights after dark.

Choosing turtle-friendly bulbs (amber-colored over 560 nm in wavelength) and keeping them low to the ground are also helpful steps. You can also draw your curtains to shield interior lights that can be seen on the beach.

Our team has been going door to door for months, and it's never enough. It's hard to find someone to speak to, and when we do, it's often a renter that is only there for a short term. We all need to do our part to keep these threatened turtles safe on our beaches.
