Most insects sting once and retreat. The fire ant doesn’t. It clamps down with its mandibles to anchor itself in place, then stings repeatedly while it holds on, injecting alkaloid venom with every strike. That venom is what causes the intense burning sensation, blisters, and swelling that fire ant stings are known for. It’s a survival strategy built for maximum damage in minimum time — locking on so the target can’t easily shake it off before the real damage is done. For an insect this small, that’s a surprisingly effective offense. Have you ever been on the receiving end of a fire ant sting?
