At 7:51pm one of our Volunteers responded to Lee Road 186 on a report of a tree falling on a Carport. At arrival the Volunteer found a large tree branch had fallen on an attached carport, causing the roof to collapse on a parked car. The Volunteer found no electrical or other hazards. The homeowner was advised to contact her insurance company.

At 2:14 pm, one of our Volunteers was dispatched to Lee Road 240, near Lee Road 206 on a report of a Tree Down across power wires. Crawford Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. responded with mutual aid. Together the Volunteers and Lee County Sheriff's Office provided traffic control until the arrival of Alabama Power, who shut down power and removed the tree. The roadway was reopened at 3:10 pm.

At 11:17 am, while handling another incident nearby, our Volunteers saw a two-car crash at the intersection of AL Hwy 169 and Lee Road 175. Engine 511 and three Volunteers rushed to the crash and evaluated the drivers, who had minor injuries and refused medical transport.

At 10:00am the Dollar General reported smoke in their store. Engine 511, Tanker 512 and Rescue 520 responded to the scene with four of our Volunteers. Our volunteers searched the inside of the store and eventually located a faulty heater above a refrigeration unit. The Store had an HVAC specialist respond and disconnect the unit. Our Volunteers blew the smoke out of the store using our gas power fan and at 12:20 pm our units cleared the scene.

At 9:50 pm, Engine 511, Rescue 520 and five of our Volunteers responded to a report of smoke inside the Dollar General on Lee Road 175. Crawford Volunteer Fire Department, responded with Engines, 304, 305, 306 and three Volunteers for Mutual Aid.

At arrival, our Volunteers found the Store Employees had evacuated the building, which had a light smoke inside. Volunteers searched, but could not locate any fire or heat source, using their Thermal Imaging Cameras (TIG). At 11:16pm units cleared the scene.

Today, one of our Volunteers attended an 8-hour Venomous Snakes Class held at Beauregard Volunteer Fire Department by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. The class taught participants how to identify Venomous Snakes, how to handle them and most importantly, medical responses to snake bite victims.

This class was paid for by a grant from the Alabama Association of RC&D Councils.

Departments struggle to recruit as number of unpaid firefighters drops to lowest level since 1991

At 10:47am, our Volunteers were dispatched to the intersection of AL-169 and Lee Road 140 on a report of an auto accident with injuries. Beauregard Volunteer Fire Department responded to our Mutual Aid call. At arrival, Volunteers discovered this was a two-car collision with fatalities. Our Volunteers used the hydraulic extraction device to rescue one person who was transported to the hospital by East Alabama EMS.

Lee County Sheriff's Office and Lee County, Alabama Emergency Management Agency provided scene security and hazmat cleanup. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Fatal Accident Team responded for the investigation. In addition ALDOT Southeast Region responded to assist with traffic control.

The Highway was re-opened about 1:20 pm.
