Have you had trouble keeping baby close and nursing during the holidays?
The holidays often mean family and friends visiting including many who want to hold the new baby. Many parents find that it helps to set limits and say no to family and friends if you feel that you (or your baby!) can’t cope.
- Try to make sure that your baby is nursing according to their usual pattern.
- Be alert to your baby’s cues.
- Be prepared to intervene if your baby is getting over-stimulated or needs to nurse.
- Try finding a quiet place to nurse so that your baby is less distracted.
- Don’t allow yourself to feel guilty if nursing is preventing you from “helping out”.
- As an added bonus, baby is less likely to become sick especially thanks to the protective antibodies in your milk.

Sometimes we don’t even realise what can negatively affect our milk supply!...

Being a breastfeeding mom doesn't necessarily mean the baby has to latch to your breast. All of these are equally valid, and are all breastfeeding journeys.

The bottom line is that you're doing what's best for you and your baby in whatever way YOU can. And that's all that matters.

No need to have a huge stash. Just enough for the next day. And remember: in Colorado women have the right to express milk at work whenever they need to and can express milk during their 15 minute breaks and lunch - until their baby is two years old! Expressing milk at least every two hours will create the needed milk for the next day.

How much milk should you have on hand for your baby's caregiver if you're heading back to work? The average baby needs 1-1.5 oz of milk for every hour that you’re away. So in an 8 hour day, they’ll likely need 8-12 oz. Every baby is different, but this should be a good baseline to start you off. Remember to practice pace bottle feeding.

If you're pumping, how much milk does your baby usually drink in one day?

One of my favorite breastfeeding hacks!

Did you know that if you stop breastfeeding, it IS entirely possible to reestablish breastfeeding again?

So how do you relactate?

Usually, it takes the same amount of time to resume breastfeeding as the time that has elapsed since you stopped. For example, if your baby stopped breastfeeding 2 months ago, it may take up to 2 months to reestablish your full milk production. Sometimes, relactation produces enough breastmilk to supply all of baby’s needs. Other times, supplementation may still be needed.

Here are some tips to help with relactation:
💜Put baby to breast at each feeding and for comfort between feedings as often as possible.
💜Use hand expression or a breast pump, aiming to pump every 2-3 hours (even if nothing comes out!)
💜Use a supplemental nursing system to provide expressed milk at the breast while baby is latched. This helps increase oxytocin and provides extra stimulation to the breast tissue.

Keep at it, mama! And seek out support if you need it.
Have any of you mamas relactated?
