The Salina Fire Department provides fire protection, emergency medical services, rescue and hazardous materials services to the citizens of Salina. Rescue and emergency medical services are extended into Saline County by governmental agreement. Protecting the community is accomplished through rapid deployment of emergency resources, code enforcement, and public education for both fire and medical

emergencies. The department has five divisions, those being: Administration, Fire Prevention, EMS, Training and Safety and Fire Operations. The fire department is comprised of ninety five employees. Eighty four of the ninety five employees are spread across three shifts that work 24 hours at a time. Shift change is at 0800 each morning. The remaining eleven positions provide administrative, support, and fire prevention services. The fire department operates from four strategically located and staffed fire stations. Station Locations:

Fire Station 1 – 222 W. Elm Street

Fire Station 2 – 1110 S. Fire Station 3 – 2633 Belmont Blvd. Fire Station 4 – 669 Briarcliff Rd. Each year the fire department responds to more than 2000 fire related emergencies and 5000 EMS or medical related emergencies. In a 24 hour period the department responds to an average of 14 emergency calls a day. The fire department ambulance service transported more than 120 citizens to hospitals outside the community for advanced medical care. Emergency transfers can occur at a moments notice. The fire department provides specialized services for hazardous material responses, technical rescue, vehicle extrication, swift water rescue, trench rescue, building collapse, and disaster management.

Storm debris and yard waste may not be openly burned within the City of Salina under city ordinance.

Following recent storms, residents are reminded not to burn branches, leaves, brush, or other yard waste. Open burning creates a fire risk, especially during dry or windy conditions, and smoke or visible flames are often reported to 911 as possible structure or grass fires. When that happens, fire crews must respond to investigate, which can temporarily take personnel and apparatus out of service from actual emergencies.

Residents are also asked not to place storm debris on or around fire hydrants. Hydrants must remain clear, visible, and accessible at all times so firefighters can locate and use them quickly during a fire or other emergency. We ask that you keep 3 feet around all fire hydrants clear year round.

Please help keep Salina safe by following city ordinance and disposing of storm debris through proper cleanup methods.

We want to give a big shoutout to Casey, our EVT, for going above and beyond for the Salina Fire Department.

Casey recently built the EMS bed for our new Can-Am vehicle, which will help us reach patients in off-road areas and on hiking trails where traditional apparatus cannot easily go. He built the entire bed unit from scratch, then painted it and wired in all of the emergency lights and siren.

Casey’s day-to-day job is maintaining and repairing our fire and EMS apparatus, but once again he stepped up and used his skills to help improve our service to the community.

Thank you, Casey, for your hard work, dedication, and willingness to go the extra mile day in and day out. Your efforts do not go unnoticed, and we are proud to have you at the Salina Fire Department.

Public Safety Message: Portable Generator Safety

The Salina Fire Department is reminding residents to use portable gas generators safely following recent storm damage and power outages.

Portable generators can help during outages, but improper use can cause carbon monoxide poisoning, fire, electrocution, and burns.

Generator Safety Tips

• Never use a generator indoors or in a garage, basement, crawl space, shed, or other enclosed or partially enclosed area.
• Place generators outside only, at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents whenever possible.
• Point the exhaust away from your home and other occupied buildings.
• Install battery-operated or battery-backup carbon monoxide alarms in your home and check that they are working.
• Do not plug a generator directly into a wall outlet. This can cause backfeeding and seriously injure utility workers or others.
• Use heavy-duty outdoor-rated extension cords that are free of damage.
• Keep the generator dry. Protect it from rain and standing water, and do not operate it with wet hands.
• Turn the generator off and let it cool before refueling. Gasoline spilled on hot engine parts can ignite.
• Store fuel in approved containers and keep it away from heat sources, open flames, and children.
• Keep children and pets away from operating generators.

Know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning
If you or a family member feels dizzy, weak, nauseated, confused, or has a headache after generator use, get outside immediately and call 911.

During power outages, safety must come first. Please use generators carefully to protect your household, your neighbors, and emergency responders.

If you have a true fire, medical, or other life-threatening emergency, call 911. During the current storm clean up and power outages, please do not call the Fire Department for non-emergency needs.

The Saline County Health Department, located at 125 W. Elm St., has opened its lobby to the public as a cooling shelter and a place to charge medical devices. The lobby will remain open until 7 p.m. today. For questions, residents can call 785.826.6600.

If you need assistance with an oxygen concentrator or other medical device during the power outage, call the Saline County Health Department at 785.826.6606 for help finding a solution.

Saline County Emergency Management is coordinating volunteer chainsaw crews to assist residents. Crews can cut and move limbs or downed trees to the curb for limb pickup.

We wanted to pass along to the public that Fire Station 2 is back open and crews have moved back in as of 4pm today. The station was closed for a short time due to roof damage from the hail storm, causing major leaks inside the station. All repairs have been made at this time.

Fire hose advancement may not look flashy, but it is one of the most important skills firefighters train on regularly.

Over the past week, all three shifts at the Salina Fire Department took part in fire hose advancement training. This hands-on training helps our crews build and maintain the skills needed to safely and effectively move hose lines into position during a fire.

Advancing a charged hose line takes teamwork, communication, strength, and technique. Regular training like this prepares our firefighters to work efficiently in challenging conditions and helps us provide the best possible service to our community when seconds matter most.

Whether it’s a firefighter training manual, EMS protocols, or trade magazines, they are constantly building their knowledge and sharpening their skills. Today, on Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the men and women of the United States Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to our country.

We are also especially grateful for our firefighters and paramedics here at the Salina Fire Department who have served in the military. Their continued commitment to serving others reflects the same sense of duty, sacrifice, and dedication that Memorial Day represents.
