A Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather has been outlined for parts of northeast Oklahoma on Tuesday evening.

At this time, the threat appears isolated, but a few storms could become strong to severe during the afternoon and evening hours. The primary concerns will be hail up to around quarter size and localized damaging wind gusts. While the tornado threat remains very low, it is not completely zero.

One factor working against a more widespread severe weather event is expected cloud cover and limited instability. However, strong winds higher in the atmosphere may allow a few storms to rotate, which is why the Storm Prediction Center is keeping a Marginal Risk in place.

As always, we’ll continue monitoring forecast trends and provide updates if the risk increases or if any watches or warnings become necessary. Stay weather aware Tuesday afternoon and evening and stay tuned to MCWX!

TORNADO WATCH ISSUED UNTIL 11:00 PM

A Tornado Watch is now in effect for much of northeast Oklahoma, including the Tulsa metro, extending north to Bartlesville, Ponca City, Vinita, Miami, and east into northwest Arkansas. Conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes this evening.

The greatest threats tonight include:
• Tornadoes, some of which could develop quickly
• Damaging wind gusts over 70 mph
• Large hail
• Frequent lightning and torrential rainfall

Storms are expected to increase in coverage through the evening hours. Not everyone within the watch area will see severe weather, but this means atmospheric conditions are favorable for dangerous storms to develop.

Now is the time to review your severe weather safety plan, make sure you can receive warnings, and be prepared to move to shelter if a warning is issued for your location.

⚠️ Expect Severe Weather Tonight…

**A more potent system is headed into the Ozarks after dark with severe weather likely**

- This is mostly an overnight system by the time it gets into Arkansas.

🌪️ There will be a tornado risk and the wind risk is more elevated today then it’s been as of late.

⚡️I think we get power outages tonight in NW Arkansas. It’s really a factor of antecedent rainfall (ground is freakin soaked!) and severe wind gusts exceeding 50mph. 💨

🌲 Trees should uproot easily.

🌪️ I would expect the tornado risk on the leading line. Maybe 1-2am for Rogers, Arkansas?

Not sure if it maintains intensity into Fort Smith, probably not but if so it’ll be around 4am.

🚨Late evening tornadoes are likely in SE Kansas and SW Missouri.

A large severe thunderstorm complex will form this evening over the Central Plains and dive southeast bringing severe weather from 9PM-2AM across parts of the Southern Plains and Ozark! Beyond 2AM, storms continue but likely won’t be severe with only and isolated severe risk. Significant severe weather is possible with the strongest storms. Before this complex moves in, isolated severe storms are possible at towns across the entire region⛈️

A very strong El Niño has developed, and there’s an 63% chance we see a Super El Niño into the Winter. Oklahoma’s weather could take a much stormier turn.

Expect a hot, humid summer with occasional heavy rain, but the bigger impacts would likely arrive during fall and winter. A stronger southern jet stream often brings more frequent storm systems across Oklahoma, increasing the chances for soaking rains, flooding, ice storms, and even snow events.

Looking ahead to spring 2027, abundant Gulf moisture and an active storm track could also increase severe weather opportunities across the Southern Plains.

In short: less drought, more storms.
