The people of Primary Children’s Hospital wear everything from uniforms to scrubs. Each may as well be in a cape - they are heroes.

Three days ago I was at a senior care center where the mortuary came to care for the body of a lovely woman who’d taken her last breath nearly 100 years after her first.

Three hours ago the mortuary came to the room next to my son’s in this hospital, to care for the body of a beautiful infant who’d taken her last breath merely 100 hours after her first.

In my line of work, I’m sometimes called in to help recalibrate malfunctioning teams and even malfeasant people. In those cases, perspective has been numbed.

I’m left to wonder, if some of those people were to immerse themselves in hours of observation in a place like this children’s hospital, would they feel it? Would they feel the solemn sorrow of loss and answerless suffering?

Would they rejoice in the gratitude of life and healing with a smile on their face and a tear in their eye as I have this week while looking on?

I am no neutralist. I am certainly not against wealth. Money, career trajectory, expanding influence and status are all important. But as Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.”

People matter.

BTW - my son will be just fine.

Recognizing growth in others makes a significant deposit in the emotional bank account of the relationship.

It’s an easy thing to do, but humans make it hard. Psychology gives us 5 reasons why people fail to acknowledge growth in the people around us:

1. Psychological Inertia – The tendency of people to resist updating their beliefs about someone, even when presented with new evidence.

2. Confirmation Bias – When people selectively notice and interpret information in a way that reinforces their preexisting opinions.

3. Impression Freeze – The idea that first impressions, or long-held perceptions, are difficult to change even in the face of clear personal growth.

4. The Persistence of Memory Bias – People remember past versions of you more vividly than the present, making it hard for them to see your evolution.

5. Status Quo Bias – A preference for familiar perceptions over updated realities, making others resistant to acknowledging your change.

Making time today to acknowledge someone’s growth is an exercise that benefits both of you.
