Members had a tour of the Utah Geological Core Research Center today. We got to explore hundreds of core samples, examine micrabialites from the GSL, and view a “megablock” that contains the greatest known number of raptor fossils in the western hemisphere. Thank you to DNR and the staff for showing us around.

We hope you had a Merry Christmas and we wish you a peaceful and prosperous New Year!

Utah Mining Association was proud to take part in this momentous occasion. Not only because Martha Hughes Cannon is a wonderful part of our state and national history, but also because her new statue at the U.S. Capitol is made from Rio Tinto Kennecott Utah Copper!

The trailblazing woman from Utah, Martha Hughes Cannon was a suffragist, doctor, senator, orator, wife and mother.

The Good Samaritan Remediation of Abandoned Hardrock Mines Act of 2024 is up for passage in the U.S. House tomorrow. This bipartisan, bicameral bill will accelerate efforts to clean up abandoned mine lands which predate modern environmental laws and mining industry best practices.

The bill is years in the making and needs to get across the finish line. Please encourage your member of Congress to support final passage.

Many thanks to Congresswoman Celeste Maloy, the primary sponsor of the House bill. ALL members of Utah’s congressional delegation are sponsors or co-sponsors of this bill, which shows that Utah is leading the way on common sense legislation that supports the public, taxpayers, and industry.

Utah has about 17,000 abandoned mine openings, and those who wish to clear the danger face a number of legal hurdles. Congress can change that this week.
