Associated Food Stores is an American retailers cooperative that supplies about 400 independently owned retail supermarkets throughout Utah, Arizona, Idaho, Colorado, Montana, Oregon, Nevada and Wyoming. Lloyd in 1940, who was the president of the Utah Retail Grocers Association. In 2009, Associated Food Stores purchased 34 Albertsons stores in Utah from Supervalu Inc. The stores were renamed Associated Fresh Market and focus on fresh produce and meat. Associated Food Stores was founded in 1940 by Donald P. Lloyd, president of the Utah Retail Grocers Association along with 34 Utah retailers. Concerned with effect that large corporate stores would have on small independent retailers, he felt the only way these small businesses could survive is if they united and faced the competition as one, therefore increasing their collective buying power. He convinced 34 stores to donate $300 to help build an independent and "associated" warehouse. Corporate Stores
As well as supplying independent grocers, Associated Food Stores also owns several corporate stores under five different names. Fresh Market, Macey's, Lin's, Dick's Market, and Dan's (all in Utah Except for one Lin's in Overton, Nevada) are all owned and operated by Associated Food Stores. Source

Macey's celebrated the grand re-opening of its remodeled Lehi store last Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a donation to Lehi Elementary School and the unveiling of several new guest amenities for the community.

Serving Lehi since 2011, Macey's welcomed community members, local leaders and students from Lehi Elementary School to celebrate the completion of the project. During the event, Macey's presented a donation to Lehi Elementary School and Lehi High School to help address food insecurity and support students heading back to school this fall.

“Macey’s has been a part of the Lehi community for 15 years, and this donation is just one way we’re able to give back,” said Greg Welling, vice president of retail operations for Macey’s. “This remodel is another way we’re investing in Lehi. Our goal is to continue being a primary gathering place for our community.”

This remodel offers guests a fresh and modern “Happy Shopping” experience. There are many new features including a Starbucks, a new indoor seating area, updated décor and a BreadBot allowing guests to order a fresh, hot loaf of bread throughout the day. The improvements were designed to make shopping more convenient while creating additional opportunities for guests to gather, dine and enjoy fresh food offerings.

Guests can also look forward to a new drive-thru pharmacy opening soon, further enhancing the store’s health and wellness offerings. The pharmacy offers a variety of services to support guests’ health needs, including clinical services, birth control, strep testing and treatment, cold sore treatment, flu shots and non-invasive women’s health solutions. When shoppers see a Blue Unicorn protein bar on store shelves today, they're seeing the story of a Utah-grown company, a unique entrepreneurial vision, and the kind of local partnership that helps small businesses reach new heights.

That story took another step forward recently with the opening of Blue Unicorn's storefront and warehouse in Spanish Fork and the company's entry into the Associated Food Stores distribution center. Together, those milestones are helping the fast-growing brand reach customers across the region while remaining rooted in the community where it all began.

For Jason Christensen, founder and CEO of Blue Unicorn, the company's journey started with a simple observation: consumers deserved a better protein bar.

"One of my favorite things about our story is that it didn't start with us trying to invent another protein bar," Christensen said. "The world already had plenty of those."

Instead, the company grew from the work of Dr. Luke Tolley, who spent years studying nutrition and experimenting with ways to create a product that tasted great while delivering strong nutritional value.

"When we were introduced to what he had created, we couldn't stop thinking about it," Christensen said. "It tasted like a treat but it had incredible macros and good ingredients. And our kids were begging for them, which was something we'd never experienced before. That's when Blue Unicorn was born."

According to Brad Erickson, category manager at AFS, Blue Unicorn stood out immediately.

"This is a unique product, thus the 'Unicorn' in the bar category. This is a plant-based protein bar, chocolate enrobed, with a cream filling unlike any others in the category. And it tastes good too."

For growing companies, access to distribution can be transformative.

"It's huge for a vendor like this to make their product easily available through AFS's distribution network," Erickson said. "Once in the warehouse and planogram, it's available to over 500 retailers."

For AFS, that's exactly the kind of success story worth celebrating: a local company with a unique idea, supported by retailers, embraced by customers, and growing through the power of community partnership.

On Wednesday, representatives from Associated Food Stores joined Governor Spencer Cox, the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs, Zions Bank, and the Utah Food Industry Association at the State Capitol to support Utah's military families.

As part of the annual Flavors of Utah initiative—which highlights local products while driving community-outreach efforts—volunteers assembled and prepared 300 care packages filled with Utah-made goods. An Associated Food Stores semitruck transported the packages to the State Capitol, where they were transferred to Utah National Guard vehicles for distribution to the families of deployed service members.

While service members are deployed overseas, their families face significant challenges at home. This collaborative effort serves as a tangible expression of community appreciation and support for their ongoing sacrifice.

Gratitude goes out to the organizers, volunteers, and the Associated Food Stores team members who coordinated logistics to make this event a success.

A tradition that has been part of Macey’s stores for generations was featured on a national stage this Independence Day weekend as drone footage of the Freedom 250™ flag flying above Macey’s Olympus is displayed during America 250 celebrations in Washington, D.C.

The footage, captured at Macey’s Olympus against the backdrop of Utah’s Wasatch Mountains, was captured and shared by Colonial Flag, the official flag partner with Freedom 250™ and Macey’s flag provider.

“The production team for the celebrations at the mall in Washington D.C. enjoy showing videos of the Freedom 250 flag during events and I recommended using footage of the flag flown at Macey’s Olympus because of the dramatic backdrop of the mountains,” said Paul Swenson, CEO of Colonial Flag.

Add a caption (optional)
The video will be incorporated into patriotic vignettes and will most likely play throughout the day Saturday on the giant screens on the event stage and on screens throughout the mall as the celebration continues in coming weeks.

The Freedom 250 flag, which features the iconic Betsy Ross star circle design with “250” at its center, is part of a nationwide effort to commemorate the nation’s semiquincentennial in 2026.

For Macey’s, the recognition is especially meaningful. Walt Macey, founder of Macey’s in 1947, served our country in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II in the South Pacific. Walt was proud to be an American and was passionate about the American Flag, symbolizing freedom, unity, and our nation’s founding principles.

Macey’s has continued to proudly display large American flags at our stores in communities where they are permitted.

Kent’s Market in Plain City turned its parking lot into a staging ground of gratitude on Armed Forces Day, hosting its annual Meals for Military event in partnership with Operation Homefront, Associated Food Stores and dozens of national and local vendors.

On Saturday, May 16, volunteers lined up early to greet more than 400 military families, many of whom are lower-income service members stationed at nearby Hill Air Force Base. From 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., each family drove through and had their vehicles loaded with bags of groceries, household essentials, fresh produce, gift cards and other donated goods.

This year, organizers were able to reach even more families and provide larger individual donations than in previous years, building on a track record of steady growth. Since the program launched in 2021 with 50 families and two bags of groceries, it has grown exponentially. Last year, each family received roughly $700 worth of groceries and a $50 Kent’s gift card, bringing the total value of donations to nearly $300,000. This year each family received over $800 in groceries and an additional $5,000 in giveaways were also distributed. Over 225 volunteers participated and Kent’s donated over $30,000 in labor, $30,000 in groceries and an additional $15,000 cash donation to Operation Homefront.

“It’s incredible to see how this event has grown year after year,” said Allen Christensen, marketing and advertising manager for Associated Food Stores. “Kent’s puts their all into this for their communities. When you see these families drive through and the looks on their faces, you realize just how meaningful this support is. It’s an honor for AFS to stand alongside Kent’s and our vendor partners in giving back to the men and women who sacrifice so much for our country.”

Kent’s Market President and CEO Jon Fawson personally invited AFS team members to participate, noting that more than 800 military members are currently deployed from Hill Air Force Base. “This is our way of giving back to those families who are sacrificing so much during this time,” Jon said.

According to Operation Homefront, one in four junior enlisted military families report food insecurity. The Kent’s program has been recognized as best in class nationally by the nonprofit, which has exclusively partnered with Kent’s and AFS in Utah.

This memorable event encapsulates the spirit of Kent’s Market, Associated Food Stores and its tremendous partners, all dedicated to serving the communities that serve us.
