Last but not least of the universities I visited last month, the University of Manchester!
It's one of the largest in the UK, with about 35,000 undergraduate and 9,000 graduate students - representing all 190 countries in the world in a truly global learning environment. The International Society is "home away from home" for many students, with multiple activities organized every week to provide opportunities for students to get involved and make social connections.
Manchester excels in many academic areas, including health sciences, business, and engineering.
There’s surprising flexibility for changing specializations within a faculty - for example, within the business school. This allows students time to try various classes before committing to their specialization. In addition, students have the option of studying abroad for a year, completing an industry placement year, or graduating within 3 years. And of course most masters degrees are 12 months in length, with both taught and research options. This allows many students to graduate with both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in just four years.
As a well-funded, world-class research university, Manchester students and faculty enjoy access to cutting-edge labs and facilities. The university is actively engaged in research around the world.
A consistent theme is the university’s attention to protecting diversity and equity across all student populations and academic disciplines. Student support services are provided not only by the university itself, but within the individual schools as well.
Students tend to like living in Manchester, as the university is just a short walk from the city center. The campus is beautiful - with a mix of historic and modern buildings and plenty of green space throughout. A number of residence halls surround the campus - both university-owned and private, to suit everyone’s budget. All are single rooms, as is the norm in the UK, and first-year housing is guaranteed for international students.
