High Reliability Organizations - High Reliability Organizations (HROs) lead their competitors in quality, safety and targeted key performance indicators and they also develop internal capabilities to continuously lead in their markets. Compare HRO success with other organizations which hire expensive consulting firms to lead employees vs. engage their own frontline experts in the strategy. Results often failure, and disgruntled underutilized key employees leave to contribute at competitors. HROs hire the best, promote development, and use consultants in developing leadership and the frontline. Boards should question leadership prior to going outside asking why the hiring has not built the internal skills. Above all, the board should review consultant costs and outcomes with facts and performance capability improvement.
