Lately I've been meeting with a lot of people about budgeting.

And the same questions keep coming up:

How much should I save in an emergency fund?
Where should I keep it?..

Here's the 7-phase roadmap I walk people through:

Phase 1 → $1,000 saved

Phase 2 → 1 month of expenses

Phase 3 → 3 months (the minimum I recommend)

Phase 4 → 6 months

Phase 5 → 9 months

Phase 6 → 12 months

Phase 7 → 18-24 months (for those starting a business, leaving a job, or in niche careers)

Phases 2-6 depend on what you consider "necessary expenses."

At the very least, cover the 4 walls:

Housing

Utilities

Food

• Transportation

Some keep it lean.

Others include extras like subscriptions, kids' activities, or even vacations.

No wrong answer—it's about peace of mind.

Re

Where to keep it?

High-yield savings
Money market
Cash (but it loses value to inflation... and you can actually lose it.
I've been through a house fire—| know it can happen.)

• What not to use: stocks or investments.

This isn't about growth.

It's about stability and security.

I recommend 3 months as a baseline.

If you're more cautious, shoot for 6-9 months.

And once you're there, it's time to think long-term:

Max out your 401(k) (at least the match)
Fund a Roth IRA
Or use a brokerage for flexibility
Your emergency fund protects your today.

Your investments build your tomorrow.

• What phase feels right for you?
