Resilience is essential to riding out the storms and overcoming the challenges of leadership. When others run or hide, leaders step up, endure, adapt, and overcome.
But how do cultivate this kind of resilience? Many of us equate resilience with being stubborn or willing ourself to hang on. But stubbornness too quickly leads to burn out or blow up.
Sustainable, calm, steadfast resiliency comes from being kind to yourself. No, not just letting yourself off the hook, but setting yourself down gently instead of beating yourself up when you fail, get tired, are indecisive, or overwhelmed. Self-compassion causes you to slow down, feed your souls, rest your body, and calm your mind so that you can refuel, refocus, and reengage.
So next time: listen to your body. Listen to the stress and strain and respond with compassion. Extend grace and kindness to yourself. Give yourself a minute to breathe. Practice self-compassion and you’ll be able to keep going with more clarity, strength, and wisdom.
