We love our racing quarter horses!! They are athletic, incredibly smart and have some of the biggest hearts in the equine world. But….

We see it all the time, a rider with great intentions buys a phenomenal off the track prospect, but within a few months the partnership completely falls apart. The horse is labeled “crazy” and rider is frustrated and scared. But here’s the hard truth, the horse didn’t fail the training strategy did.

Before taking the leap to buy an off the track horse, there are a few vital things a buyer must understand.

They are conditioned to do a job both physically and mentally, they are athletes trained to peak fitness. Their steering, stopping and energy cues are completely different from a standard horse. They’re not being bad they are just speaking a different language. Transitioning them off the track takes immense patience, a solid training plan and often guidance from someone who understands track mentality and cues.

An off the track horse is a highly trained athlete not an uneducated baby and if you treat it as such it will most likely lead to massive miscommunication and frustration for both horse and rider.

An off the track horse can easily become a 1D superstar but only if you have the confidence, patience and knowledge to guide them through the transition. If you lack any of these an off the track horse is not a good fit for you.

When a partnership with the an off the track horse goes south, the easiest thing for a frustrated buyer to do is blame the breeder, the previous owner and the entire racing industry instead of admitting they lack the specific tools to transition the horse. If you choose to transition a horse, ego has no place in the barn! There are plenty of people open and willing to give you help. Admitting you need help is not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of good horsemanship!!
