ALAMO Winding Supervisor, before removing the steel press plates, inspects this rewound 3 phase core and coil after baking and pressing the coils in the oven.

The process of rewinding and pressing a three-phase core and coil:

-Baking and pressing: Each coil is individually pressed before the unit goes into the oven. After baking, the coils are pressed again to set their shape.

-Supervisor inspection: With the steel press plates still in place, our Winding Supervisor reviews the rewound core and coil. Checking at this stage confirms the baking and pressing came out right before moving on.

-Ready for stacking: Once the unit comes out of the oven and passes inspection, it's ready for stacking. Baking and pressing is the stage that comes right before it.

This 3-phase sub with lid mounted elevated manhole covers over the HV and LV interior tank connections stands at attention waiting for its primer coat to dry.

Painting is about more than looks. Winding Wednesday

The winding process begins with rectangular coils that are pressed and baked at approximately 300°F. This baking process seals the insulation paper around the coils. After baking, the coils return to the production area, where they are landed and positioned correctly. Workers then stack the coils and assemble the frame around them. After the frame is in place, the coils are connected, and the necessary electrical hookups are completed. Additional connections may still be required before the unit moves to the next stage. During assembly, testing is performed to ensure everything functions properly. A turns-ratio test (TTR) is conducted to verify the voltage ratios and confirm that the voltage and ratios meet the required specifications before the assembly is finished.

Our ALAMO San Antonio winding team just finished rewinding 4 of 6 of these double stacked cylindrical copper coils for a customer owned 4000kVA Substation.

The last 2 coils are in the process of being completed, and then the set will head to the bakeout oven, where it will be baked at temperature to thermally set the Diamond Kraft Epoxy Paper.
