Just finished a love-filled morning launching the funding and volunteer appeal for Barrington Neighbors' Serna Summer Enrichment Program at Church of Reconciliation - An Episcopal Faith Community.

This summer program for area children provides learning opportunities, breakfast and lunch, enrichment activities, and love and support for 60 area children who would otherwise face the 'summer slump' over a 5-week period. Best of all? The program is completely FREE to all children who attend!

I respect John Maxwell and his leadership teachings, but I have to disagree with this particular statement. I consider myself a strong leader, and I’ll be the first to admit that there are times when I have no idea what ‘the way’ is. I’ve also worked with plenty of faith-leaders who can look at a problem and not know which path to take.

Does this negate our leadership ability? Does this make us ineffective?

Read the full article and leave your thoughts. How do you define leadership?

I have recently returned home after attending a 3-day conference, and while I was there I ran across this quote. Honestly, I’m struggling with it:

In faith communities, as in business, it is too easy to sit and wait for work to come to us. While the opportunities are different for churches than for businesses, we as leaders still need to do the hard work and heavy lifting.

How does your church "build a door" to future opportunity?

What innovations has your church recently embraced?

What roadblock is currently keeping opportunity's door from opening?

Let's come together in conversation to inspire and lead as a community of faith leaders.

While I respect John Maxwell and his leadership teachings, I'm struggling with this quote.

Strong leaders need to be able to recognize when they don't know the way, while at the same time should be able to lean on their leadership team and advisers to discern where the path leads and what steps you need to take to get there.

Do you think this quote is accurate? How does it apply to leaders in your faith community? What is your definition of a leader?

I'll share more of my thoughts in next week's newsletter.

More and more churches are providing Ashes to Go for Ash Wednesday, while many church leaders see this as a 'step too far' towards meeting the people where they are.

Does your church offer Ashes to Go or a more traditional worship time with the Imposition of Ashes? Is this a way to invite more people into your faith community or do you feel it keeps them on the outside?

For years congregations, ecumenical groups, and other Christian organizations across the United States and beyond have gone to the street corners, transit stops, shopping centers and campuses to offer ashes and prayer to God’s people where they live and work.

Does your church website cover these basics? The overwhelming majority of new attendees to a church have checked out your online presence before EVER setting foot on your grounds. How do you measure up?

What are your TOP 3 MUST HAVES on your church website? Have you ever looked at your website as if you were a newcomer or visitor? Where does your struggle with its online presence?

I want us to put our best face forward, literally for the sake of the Gospel. My hope is to kindle a conversation and spur action that might help even a few congregations have better websites.
