RethinkWaste We represent 11 public agencies in San Mateo County, CA helping to reduce waste & conserve resources.

RethinkWaste is a joint powers authority of eleven public Agencies (Belmont, Burlingame, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, the County of San Mateo and the West Bay Sanitary District) in San Mateo County, California. RethinkWaste owns and manages the Shoreway Environmental Center which receives all the recyclables, organic materials, and garbage collected in its service area. RethinkWaste also provides strategic oversight, support and management of service providers that collect, process, recycle and dispose of materials for its Member Agencies. RethinkWaste (aka South Bayside Waste Management Authority) was formed in 1982.

Enjoy tours of our facility, creative reuse activities, a hands-on mending workshop, low-waste snacks, and much more. 💚🏗

Residential customers in single-family homes can schedule up to two curbside Bulky Item Collection (BIC) appointments per calendar year at no additional charge, on regular collection days. Residents living in apartments or condos can contact their property manager to schedule an appointment. BIC's do not carry over from year to year and cannot be scheduled in January. Schedule now to prepare for the holidays!

Soft plastics like plastic bags, chips bags, and candy wrappers are not recyclable. They can contaminate recycling streams, get tangled in sorting equipment, and in some cases cause processing delays.

When recycling plastic, stick to clean, empty rigid plastics like water bottles, milk jugs, and yogurt containers. Together, we can help keep recycling working efficiently! ♻🌍

Kicking off the school year with Beresford Elementary ! 🌎

This past month, our Environmental Education team visited Beresford Elementary in San Mateo for a refresher on what belongs in each of the three bins.

We started the week with a school-wide assembly, then joined students during lunch for hands-on bin monitoring, helping them sort materials correctly in real time.

By practicing proper sorting together, students are building sustainable habits that can make a lasting impact both at school and at home.

Great job, Beresford Elementary, for helping recover valuable resources, reduce waste, and keep your campus and community clean!♻👏

🎉 Big news for California and waste reduction efforts! Governor Gavin Newsom has signed our co-sponsored bill AB 762, the first-in-the-nation law that will phase out the import, sale, and distribution of disposable ni****ne vapes, helping prevent battery-related fire risks, improve public health and safety, and keep valuable materials out of our landfills.

For RethinkWaste, this milestone is especially meaningful as we continue working to prevent lithium-ion battery fires that threaten recycling facilities, workers, and communities. Together, we can build a safer, more sustainable future by keeping batteries and battery-powered devices out of the landfill and recycling bins. We thank Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin and our coalition of co-sponsors Product Stewardship Council Californians Against Waste and CALPIRG for their leadership and partnership to advance this legislation! 💚♻️
