RethinkWaste We represent 11 public agencies in San Mateo County, CA helping to reduce waste & conserve resources.

RethinkWaste is a joint powers authority of eleven public Agencies (Belmont, Burlingame, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Hillsborough, Menlo Park, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, the County of San Mateo and the West Bay Sanitary District) in San Mateo County, California. RethinkWaste owns and manages the Shoreway Environmental Center which receives all the recyclables, organic materials, and gar

bage collected in its service area. RethinkWaste also provides strategic oversight, support and management of service providers that collect, process, recycle and dispose of materials for its Member Agencies. RethinkWaste (aka South Bayside Waste Management Authority) was formed in 1982.

Join us in welcoming Carly Asherman to RethinkWaste! Carly joined RethinkWaste in August 2026 as an Environmental Education Fellow. She promotes waste reduction and proper waste sorting through community tours at the Shoreway Environmental Center, school presentations, and hands-on guidance for students and staff across the service area. Prior to RethinkWaste, Carly worked at The Willow School and Sprout Up where she promoted environmental stewardship, sustainability, and children’s connection to nature. Carly graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies and Psychology from Santa Clara University and is passionate about environmental technology, waste reduction, environmental education. 🌼♻

Our Executive Director, Joe La Mariana, recently spoke with SFGATE reporter Madeline Wells about a common source of confusion: "compostable" plastic bags.

Even though they're labeled compostable, these bags are not accepted in the green compost bin in the RethinkWaste service area. We encourage residents to compost food scraps, food-and-beverage-soiled paper, and yard trimmings, but "compostable" plastics should go in the landfill bin.

Our Executive Director, Joe La Mariana, was recently interviewed by reporter Glen Martin for Bay City News about the growing risk of lithium-ion battery fires at recycling facilities.

La Mariana reflects on the 2016 battery fire at our Shoreway Environmental Center and how the increasing number of lithium-ion batteries in our waste stream continues to create serious safety risks for recycling workers and facilities.

Join in welcoming Gabrielle Zamora to RethinkWaste! Gabrielle joined our team in July 2026 as our new Environmental Education Fellow. She promotes waste reduction and proper waste sorting through community tours at the Shoreway Environmental Center, school presentations, and hands-on guidance for students and staff across the service area. Prior to RethinkWaste, Gabrielle worked as a climate policy intern with Acterra and graduated with a BS in Conservation and Resource Studies from UC Berkeley. She brings a strong background in climate advocacy and urban ecology! ♻🌇
