Conserving critically endangered species like the California Condor and the Northern White Rhino is complex — in part because preserved germ cells from different species require their own unique culture conditions and environment to survive.

In a new study, researchers turned to rock dove embryos to explore potential solutions for preserving biodiversity. Using single-cell RNA sequencing, they identified the precise growth signals that keep germ cells healthy long-term.

These primordial germ cells, which are building blocks of eggs and s***m, are essential for conserving endangered species. By understanding how to culture them long-term, this technique could be applied across species, from birds to axolotls, making biobanking and conservation efforts far more effective over time.
