This home is in a beautiful neighborhood, it has a gorgeous view but the interior was stuck in the 1980’s. The family room was low on floor space but high on wall space with a 15’ tall ceiling. By redesigning the existing fireplace and hearth and incorporating the entire wall into the design with custom paneling, layered lighting, and decorative shelves with storage below the room now looks modern, sleek and spacious and the once unassuming wall has become its notable feature.

Updating a fireplace surround is a excellent way to refresh your home interior.
The new design combines the fire place and TV making the room seem bigger and taller. The wall color and flooring along with the TV in both photos are the same- yet, the room seems brighter and more organized with the new design

The Before and After of updating a tired dark kitchen.
The home is located in Park City, Utah. Replacing the existing cabinets, stone backsplash and quartz countertops to tones of white and cream gives this kitchen a clean, crisp and spacious presence but didn’t interfere with the warm cabin interior when combined with a custom copper hood over the stove, hammered copper sink and a cast iron decorative fireback repurposed as a back splash feature over the stovetop.

Beach House Serenity: Escaping for a weekend, a week or the summer- my Clients purchased this townhouse that looks over the Pacific Ocean to slip away to the beach for refuge and restoration. Although the townhouse had years before been professionally decorated and had once appeared in a magazine, the decor was tired and needed to be refreshed. I started this project with a new color palette using the amazing view on the other side of the window of foggy grays, warm sand and watery tones of blues and aqua as my inspiration. The unique wood carving over the sofa was purchased by my Clients on a trip to Indonesia and the two decorative prints resemble their view of the Oceanside Pier, which is just steps away. The new design and decor of this townhouse along with its coastal surroundings will hopefully seduce my Clients to rest and recharge for years to come.

Unlocking Design Secrets: Even though this townhouse had once been professionally decorated it need to be updated. The decor of a home should evolve through the years just like the people who live in the home.

Summer Beach House: It’s June and like many of us we are planning for visitors especially if you live in a city like San Diego. My Clients were no exception. I began the project by enclosing a small loft to carve out a much needed second guest room in their beach house. I designed two cabinets for each side of the bed and tied them together with a bridge that supplied ambient lighting- since there was no room for lamps. The cabinets were painted the same color as the walls to help the room feel larger and were perfect for storing guests belongings, small suitcases and beach bags. The upholstered headboard in bursts of navy, green and yellow and the 1920’s photo of beach babes welcomes their Out-of-Towners the moment they arrive to their charming suite.

Unlocking Design Secrets: Upholstered headboards are a wonderful addition to a small bedroom because they are comfortable to lean against and can boast a bold print.

Fifty Shades of Gray: The dark battleship gray walls brings drama to this living room and was my jumping off point for the new decor. I shuttered the windows in creamy white and stacked the artwork to balance the two story walls on that side of the room and I choose 40” high lamps to keep the symmetry. The bling is a contemporary mirrored sideboard and to keep the room feeling spacious I choose a coffee table in the same gray tones of the carpet. The new urban look was completed with a teal velvet high back chair and accessories were added in tones of navy blue, teal and cream. The “before” photo attests to a living room that was once dark, drab, and lacking character and “after” photos is a perfect embodiment of tradition meets modern.

Unlocking Design Secrets: To update a builder grade home and give it more character don’t forget the details by bringing in fixtures, furniture and accessories that is scaled appropriately for the space and keeps with the overall style.

A Fresh Start and New Beginning: Most often the warm, interesting homes that I admire have evolved over time but this house was decorated all at once because my Client lost their house in the 2007 San Diego fires. What was important to them, was they wanted the new house to look established......like each room grew naturally and didn’t take the style of a showroom floor. They desperately missed the feeling of “belonging” and wanted to feel “settled” in their new home after being misplaced for nearly two years while waiting for their house being rebuilt. To achieve this- I used a variety of fabrics in several patterns and textures, mixing formal and informal elements and layering the pieces to give each room interest and charm. I avoided exact symmetry with the furniture and accessory placement and I purposely did not purchase items in pairs such as lamps, side tables or picture frames to keep the room interesting. The home, although new, now has a personal style belonging only to my Client.

Unlocking Design Secrets: The window treatments in the living and dining room were a mixture of three different styles. I used shutters and two different drapery styles, tie backs and panels, in the same fabric.
