🍀Returning to the Center 🍀
Yesterday, I spent a magical day of mindfulness at Deer Park Monastery, immersing myself in the peaceful stillness of walking meditation and a deeply resonant Dharma talk.
Walking through the grounds, the phrase
"I have arrived, I am home" took on a whole new meaning as I listened to an ancient teaching from the Buddha (SN 35.247) about six wild animals tied together.
Imagine a hawk 🦅 , a fox 🦊 , a coyote , a snake 🐍 , a crocodile 🐊 , and a monkey 🐵 all tied by a single rope.
Each animal violently pulls in a different direction- the hawk to the sky, the crocodile to the water, the monkey to the jungle-exhausting themselves in a chaotic tug-of-war.
This is a perfect mirror for our six senses. Every day, our sight 👀 , hearing 👂 , smell 👃 , taste 👅 , touch 🖐️ , and unruly "monkey mind" 🧠 pull our attention outward into the world, reacting to endless stimuli and scattering our energy.
But the beauty of the story lies in what happens next: when the rope is anchored to a strong, immovable post in the center, the animals eventually stop fighting. They grow tired of the resistance, come back to the center, and lie down in peace.
That central post is “MINDFULNESS”.
When we anchor our awareness, we stop blindly reacting to the world outside.
We return to our center, tap into our inner wisdom, and elevate our consciousness.
True peace isn't about shutting out the world; it’s about finding the anchor within. 🏡✨
