Candidates that we submitted in mid-August are JUST NOW hearing that they are getting first-round interviews! If you submitted your resume in mid-August, don't fret. Between the last gasp of summer, an impending 3-day weekend, onboarding new first-year associates, and the start of Q4, things can move a bit slower at this time of year.

It's also not at all unusual for there to be a 2-3 week lag time - or even more - between submitting your resume and hearing the good news from a firm, especially during the summer.

So, don't be surprised if you're finishing up your summer holidays and you get the notification that a top-choice firm wants to speak!

Almost every candidate contemplating a lateral move right now has asked me: "should I wait until the end of the year?" The reason is obvious, and can be spelled B-O-N-U-S. However, there are compelling reasons to start the process now, and not sit on the sidelines until you can be certain of a January (or February, or March) start date.

Think about the quote "when everyone's greedy, be fearful; when everyone's fearful, be greedy." Right now, a lot of candidates are sitting on the sidelines. It's a little bit less of a competitive market now, and that could be the edge that you might need to get your foot in the door.

Even if you're looking at a mid-November start date, we're seeing some select firms make candidates WHOLE on year-end bonuses as well as giving candidates signing bonuses to true-up any class year haircuts. These are case-by-case and seen most frequently in high-demand niches, like exec comp and secondaries / fund finance, but they exist.

Who benefits? Associates who apply now may find themselves interviewing in a less competitive market and may even get the benefit of a partial make-whole or a signing bonus to help with the transition.
