A couple of weeks ago, hosted its Gifts of Hope gala, benefitting its Medicines for Children program.

Over the past 24 years, they have provided more than $600 million in essential medicines to children all over the world. I am proud to work with IRT as their fractional CMO and to support their mission.

This event was also a great chance to catch up with my dear client and friend Trevor Blair (pictured here), CEO of Blair Search Partners!

I had a blast sitting down with May L. Harris, Esq., M.A., host of the Nonprofit Counsel podcast, recently to talk about marketing for nonprofits.

We talked about why having strategic guidance is critical for organizations that want to closely manage their marketing spend and how nonprofits can effectively engage donors in a very saturated marketplace.

Thanks for having me on the show, May!

A couple of summers ago, I decided to shut down the marketing agency I’d spent a decade building.

From the outside looking in, the agency was pretty successful. We had an incredibly talented team, had experienced significant year-over-year top line revenue growth, and helped many nonprofit organizations and purpose-driven companies achieve massive growth.

Behind the scenes was another story.

I was working 70 hours a week and it still wasn’t enough to keep up. My mental health was really suffering. And I was white-knuckling it through payroll every two weeks.

I recently talked with Maggie Patterson on her podcast, the BS-Free Service Business Show, about what it was like to wind down my agency and rebuild a healthy, sustainable practice as a fractional CMO.

Four years ago, I googled "How do you know if you're drinking too much?"

If you ever find yourself googling that, there's a good chance you already know the answer.

It wasn’t the first time the question had crossed my mind. The first time I wondered if I was drinking too much, I was 23 years old. I brushed it off.

By my early 30s, I was frequently worried about how much and how often I drank. My anxiety and insomnia had become worse and mild memory loss had begun.

I spent nearly another decade trying to moderate and become a “better” drinker. I wanted to get a handle on it quietly without having to tell anyone I was struggling.

By the time I was desperate to quit, I couldn’t do it on my own and I couldn't do it quietly. I had to ask for help. I had to make my intentions to get sober known to everyone in my life, including my professional network. I had to want to get better more than I wanted to appear like I had it all together.

Today I am celebrating 4 years of sobriety.

I share my story with you because I am grateful for family, friends, colleagues and complete strangers here on LinkedIn who have shared their own stories of addiction and recovery with me over the past four years.

And I share my story because we need to talk about alcohol recovery in the workplace so we can learn how to support the sober people in our professional networks and figure out how to ask for help for ourselves when we need it.

Let's normalize talking about addiction and recovery at work.

Instead of shaming or avoiding colleagues who are trying to get sober, let's embrace and uplift them.

Let's make it easier for people to ask for help, without professional consequences.

Let's celebrate our colleagues who are brave enough to heal in public.

Most workplaces are not designed for sober people to thrive.

When I was first getting sober, my professional life was far more difficult to navigate than my personal life.

Dodging happy hour invitations, trying to find networking events that weren't centered around alcohol, and politely turning down gifted bottles of wine and champagne during the holidays was exhausting.

If you're leading a team, then at least a portion of your workforce is sober. Creating an environment where the entire team feels a sense of belonging begins with you.

Tomorrow, I'll be talking with Catherine Mattice of about the intersection of inclusion, belonging and sobriety -- and some ideas for planning fun end-of-year celebrations for your team that are meaningful to your *entire* team.

I got to spend the day with brilliant and bold yesterday. She’s the type of entrepreneur who moves quickly on new ideas and takes strategic risks that grow her companies. ⚡️

That is so inspiring to me because I’m more of a methodical, “let’s test everything before we go all in” kind of entrepreneur. 🐌 😂

Thank you for stretching me to speed up my decision making and take bigger risks, Julie!

We've been taught that our bodies are an endless self-improvement project. Most people (children, really) are wrapped up in it before we hit 10 years old and we spend the majority of our lives playing a game that can never be won. We learn that our bodies are to be scrutinized by others and a function of our worthiness.

Reclaiming Body Trust is a path to healing and liberation. It shows us how to reject the culture that has created (and continues to profit from) our shame and disconnection with our body, while creating a new way forward.

My team and I had the great honor of getting to work alongside and at to support their book launch with branding and website development, and it was such a healing, transformational experience.
