hiring a private practice consultant can be a "why didn't I do this sooner?" decision. it can also be a "why did I pay to feel confused and mildly gaslit?" decision. both happen to smart therapists.

the consulting world has genuinely excellent, ethical people in it. it also has a loud corner where confidence gets built out of hype and marketing sparkle. so we wrote down nine red flags to help you tell the difference: guaranteed income numbers with no mention of ethics, one-method gospel, "I did it once so I can teach you," dependency culture, undisclosed affiliate bias, and more.

a red flag isn't a verdict on someone's character. it's a mismatch warning. your job is to protect your time, money, nervous system, and business. discernment, not judgment.

The therapist union you're hoping for? It's not coming 🚨

We know that's hard to hear. But it's important to understand WHY - so you can stop waiting and start moving.

Here's the structural reality: You're not an employee of Aetna or Alma. No employment relationship means no bargaining unit. No bargaining unit means no union to organize.

And here's what most people don't realize: A room full of independent practice owners agreeing on rates isn't a union. It's price fixing. That's a real antitrust problem - and exactly why professional associations won't touch fee issues.

Even when associations do advocate, they work on policy timelines measured in years. Alma changed hands in May. Rates were cut by July. Policy can't move that fast.

So what CAN you do?

You can't make Aetna pay more. You can't unionize against a company you don't work for.

But you CAN leave a panel. You CAN set your own fee. You CAN own your referral pipeline so no platform controls your practice.

Mass exodus is the union. It always was.

The cuts keep happening because enough therapists stay. The only message payers actually read is therapists leaving. Not petitions. Not emails. Departures.

You have more leverage than you've been led to believe.

Hiring a therapist consultant is a lot like hiring a hiking guide. You could figure out the trail alone... or you could skip the part where you pack the wrong snacks and end up on a cliff waiting for a tiny helicopter.

Most therapists tell us they "just need marketing." Sometimes that's true. But just as often the real issue is a fee structure that doesn't match reality, a schedule that's quietly wrecking your nervous system, or systems leaking time all over the place. Marketing a practice that undercharges and overbooks you isn't worth the effort; you'd just fill a practice that depletes you.

We broke down the five reasons therapists actually reach out for support, from "I'm starting and I don't want to build this the hard way" to "I'm full and still not okay." Good chance you're sitting in one of them right now.

Want to go viral as a therapist? Here's how 📈

Get great clinical outcomes.

Yes, it's fun to go viral on social media. Lots of likes, traffic, visibility. But that's not what we're really talking about.

We're talking about doing clinical work so good that people's lives are changed forever.

That's legacy work.

People notice the changes in your clients. Their family notices. Their friends notice. And they start asking: Who's your therapist?

You get known in your community for doing exceptional clinical work. Referrals come because the results speak for themselves.

That's the kind of viral we want as clinicians.

Not vanity metrics. Transformed lives.

Hiring a therapist consultant is a little like online dating.
Some people look incredible in a curated profile. They say all the right things. And then three weeks in, you realize you're basically living inside their template.
The good news: the right match is out there, and you can usually spot it before you hand over any money. It comes down to asking better questions.
So we wrote ten of them; the kind that surface what someone actually values, what's really included (and what isn't), whether they have a real process or are just improvising, and who they're honest enough to say they're not a fit for. We also flagged the answers that should make you slow down. Anyone who guarantees you an income number without asking about your fees, your market, or your capacity? Pause.
Bring these to your next consult call. Your future self will thank you.

"I'll just join a platform to make it easy, then get off later."

If that's your plan, let's talk 💬

You do NOT need a platform to start a private practice. Even today. Even though VC-backed companies have made it feel like the default path.

Yes, learning the business side can feel intimidating. But here's the truth: You need to understand how to run your business BEFORE you outsource any part of it.

Otherwise, how do you know if you're getting a good return on investment? And what we can tell you about these platforms: It's often NOT a good return. Not for you. Not for your clients.

Why? Because they're not protecting you. They're not protecting client data.

After Talkspace chat logs showed up in court in the Jennifer Crumbley case, it became clear: These companies are not prioritizing client confidentiality the way we need them to.

When you join a platform without fully understanding the contract, you're opening your clients' data to these companies.

You don't need a platform to start.

You need:
✅ A vision of what you want to create
✅ Intentionality about who you let into relationship with your business

Think about it: Who do you want to let into the therapeutic relationship between you and your client? It doesn't have to be one of these platforms.

We have free trainings on evaluating platform contracts and how to start a practice without them. Link below.

Couples therapist Irina does something most therapists never try. Every new couple in her North Carolina practice starts with a full-day EFT intensive before any weekly work begins. No more starting over every week. No more deep attachment work crammed into forty-five minutes between school pickups.

She did not get there with a five-year plan. She got there by paying attention to what was working, trusting her clinical gut, and being willing to invest in real support along the way.

In our latest blog, we trace the actual path: from picking psychology in college because it did not require math, to community mental health, to discovering Emotionally Focused Therapy on a podcast and impulsively signing up for a training that cost more than her rent. Seven lessons on niche, intuition, outcomes, and designing a practice that fits your life.

One of these days you're gonna wake up and realize something 💡

Building a business around what YOUR nervous system needs to feel safe and secure - to be able to do this work well - that IS the definition of success.

Not filling the caseload of some venture capital platform. Not giving them your labor and your money while they profit off your license.

But honoring yourself.

Your wisdom. Your intuition. Your skill. Your gifts.

THAT is the key to unlocking success, joy, and ease in private practice.

You deserve a practice that works for YOU. Not for these big companies.

Build accordingly.

Working with a therapist consultant should pay for itself over the lifetime of the work. But here's what nobody puts on the sales page: the real ROI is rarely the flashy "I doubled my income in 30 days" story.

It usually looks more like this. You stop leaking money through under-pricing and policies you keep making exceptions to. Your marketing finally sounds like you, so the right people inquire and the weird-fit consults dry up. You make one strong decision instead of 27 hesitant half-decisions. You avoid the expensive mistakes (building a website before you're clear on your niche, hiring before your systems can hold it) that cost you whole seasons of your life.

That's the kind of return that doesn't fit neatly into an Instagram caption. But it's the kind that holds up over a decade.

We wrote a full post on what a therapist consultant actually does, how to know if it's worth it, and what to side-eye before you spend money on the wrong support.
