Hot take: going luxury is not the natural next step in your wedding business.

It is a completely different business. And treating it like a promotion you've earned is one of the most expensive mistakes I see wedding pros make.

When Elyse joined The Wedding Business Collective, she was afraid to leave The Knot.

She was getting a lot of price shoppers and dead-end inquiries.

But like so many wedding pros, she worried about what would happen if she canceled. What if she lost the few leads she was getting? What if business got even slower?!

So instead of pulling the plug and hoping for the best, she built a marketing plan.

She got clear on who she wanted to attract, what made her different, and how to market her business without depending on a directory.

Today, Elyse says she's made more money since leaving The Knot than she ever did while paying for it.

That's why I don't tell wedding pros to quit The Knot.

I tell them to stop depending on it.

Because the goal isn't to trade dependency on one source of leads for another.

The goal is to build a business that doesn't rely on a company you don't control.

Elyse's success didn't come from leaving The Knot.

It came from replacing it with something better.

The hardest part about fixing a marketing problem is that the symptom isn't always the real problem.

Not booking enough weddings doesn't automatically mean your prices are too high. It USUALLY doesn't.

Not getting inquiries doesn't automatically mean you need to redo your SEO.

And WeddingWire not working doesn't automatically mean you need another directory.

When we guess at the cause, we create this grand theory that fixing one thing will fix everything.

In reality, we often end up changing the wrong thing and wind up right back where we started. Sometimes worse.

Before you lower your prices, redesign your website, or jump to a new marketing tactic, ask yourself:

Do I actually know what's causing this problem?

Because the solution is only as good as the diagnosis.

And for the love of God, STOP LOWERING YOUR DAMN PRICES.

There is a narrative going around in this industry that luxury is the goal. That if you’re exhausted, undercharging, or working too hard for what you’re getting paid, the answer is to move upmarket. Raise your prices. Get better clients. Go luxury.

I get why that sounds appealing and I’m here to tell you it might be one of the most misleading things we say to each other.

Going after luxury weddings isn’t a promotion. It’s building a completely different business from scratch. And if you do it for the wrong reasons, which a lot of people are, it’s going to make your situation worse, not better.
