This week, RailFire Response was proud to have our Incident Management Officers (IMOs) participate in CPKC specialized Railway Emergency Response Training in Brandon, Manitoba.

An incredible opportunity to learn alongside experienced railway instructors and emergency response professionals from CPKC, BNSF Railway, GFL , Railway Association of Canada and SRS.

From live-fire exercises and foam application to railway-specific emergency response techniques, this hands-on training provided invaluable knowledge and practical experience.

🚂 RAILWAY 101 | DISTRIBUTED POWER UNITS (DPU)

Ever notice a locomotive in the middle or at the rear of a freight train?

It isn’t simply being moved somewhere.

It's most likely operating as a Distributed Power Unit — DPU.

WHAT DOES A DPU DO?

A DPU allows locomotive power to be distributed throughout a long or heavy train, rather than having all locomotive power concentrated at the front.

📡 Radio Controlled

Commands from the lead locomotive are transmitted by radio to the remote locomotive. Depending on the operation, the DPU can respond to throttle, dynamic braking and air-brake commands.

💨 Works With the Train’s Pneumatic Brake System

A DPU can supply and control brake-pipe air from another location in the train. This can improve brake-pipe charging and provide faster, more uniform brake applications and releases.

↔️ Reduces In-Train Forces

Instead of one group of locomotives pulling the entire train from the front, distributed power helps manage the buff and draft forces acting through the couplers.

🛤️ Improves Train Handling

Better management of these forces can help a locomotive engineer control long, heavy trains through changes in grade and curvature.

⛽ Can Improve Fuel Efficiency

Properly managed distributed power can improve operating efficiency and reduce unnecessary forces and energy use. FRA research has documented fuel-saving potential from distributed-power operation.

⚠️ Helps Manage Derailment Risk

Excessive in-train forces can contribute to derailments. Proper DPU placement, train marshalling and train handling are tools used to manage those forces and reduce risk. DPU does not prevent every derailment, but it is an important part of safely managing long and heavy trains.

Simply put:

Power where it’s needed. Air where it’s needed. Better control of the forces throughout the train.

Understanding how a train operates is an important part of understanding how to safely manage a railway emergency.

This week at Toronto’s Union Station, organizations from across the railway, transit, law-enforcement and public-safety communities came together to support Operation Lifesaver and Rail Safety Week.

🤝 One team. One shared commitment — getting everyone home safely.

Proud to stand alongside representatives from Operation Lifesaver, Inc. Operation Lifesaver Canada, Metrolinx, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC), Toronto Police Service, CPKC, and CN all working toward the same goal: preventing railway incidents through education, awareness and teamwork.

Different organizations. Different uniforms. Different responsibilities.

But when it comes to rail safety, we’re on the same team.

RailFire Response continues to strengthen its knowledge and capabilities in Railway Emergency Response.

Jason Jongen, Director of Strategic Engagement / Incident Management Officer recently attended a two-day TRANSCAER / CN Flammable Liquids Course at the CN Campus in Homewood, Illinois.

The hands-on training provided valuable experience in flammable liquid emergencies, railway incident response, and safe effective coordination during hazardous materials incidents.
