Happy World Environment Day!

Today, we're celebrating the incredible connection between architecture and our planet. At Hubbell & Hubbell Architects, we believe great design goes beyond creating beautiful buildings: it’s about shaping spaces that respect, protect, and enhance the environment around us.

From maximizing natural light and ventilation to incorporating sustainable materials and energy-efficient solutions, every thoughtful design decision helps build a healthier future for generations to come.

Home construction accounts for a significant portion of global energy consumption and carbon emissions. That means architects have a unique opportunity and responsibility to make a positive impact.

Whether it's designing homes that improve well-being through more natural building materials or preserving the character of existing structures through adaptive reuse, sustainable architecture is about balancing innovation with environmental stewardship.

This year's World Environment Day reminds us that every action matters. Together, we can create spaces that are not only functional and inspiring but also resilient, efficient, and kind to our planet.

At Hubbell & Hubbell, we pledge to continue shaping innovative, purpose-driven designs and embracing green technologies that support the health of both people and the natural world. Happy World Environment Day from all of us at Hubbell & Hubbell Architects!

We asked and you answered. Here are some fun facts about straw bale construction that you haven’t heard about:

Ancient Tech, Modern Comeback:

Many people think straw bale construction is new, but it’s been around since the Paleolithic Era. Some of the oldest straw bale structures in the U.S., in its more modern form, originate in the Nebraska Sandhills, where prairie grasses were vast and wide while timber was not and the soil was too sandy for sod. Settlers essentially created giant bricks from the straw, stalk left after grain harvest, not to be confused with hay, which is used for animal feed and can decompose quickly. Many of these older straw bale structures in these plains regions are load-bearing with no frame at all, however modern codes mostly utilize timber-frame or steel-frame with infill bales.

3X the Comfort:

When compressed and plastered, bales function like dense fiber blocks, creating insulation values three times the R-value of conventional insulation, important for both the homeowner’s energy cost savings and creating an incredibly quiet space.

Light it Up:

One of the most important qualities we focus on is straw bale construction’s fire resistive qualities. This is vital in fire-prone areas, and straw bale homes have survived wild fire zones at much higher rates than conventional construction. These two-foot thick walls can have a 2-hour fire rating, versus the standard industry baseline for stick-built homes is a 1-hour fire rating.

Shake It Up:

They absorb rapid movement well and have demonstrated great seismic resilience in earthquake testing.

Good Boots and a Good Hat:

The most important thing for straw bale construction is keeping out moisture. As long as the structure has a good foundation and roof, it can last a very long time.

Good for the Planet. Easy on the Build:

There are less steps with straw bale construction considering the assembly consists of exterior plaster, bales, and interior plaster. No house wraps, v***r barriers, etc. and homeowners often participate in the building of the home with the contractor in a workshop setting, resembling an Amish “barn-raising.” With each passing year, 200 million tons of straw are burned in the US. By building with straw, this construction method reduces this carbon footprint. Ultimately, straw is a cheap, raw, abundantly available, and non-toxic alternative to many building materials today. Because the bales have design versatility, designs can create niches, built-in seating, rounded corners. People often say the depth of the windows give the home a castle-like feel.

Things to Watch Out For:

Even with the proper plaster and roofing, this form of construction should not be built in extremely humid regions, such as America’s Deep South.

Any cracks that develop in exterior plaster need to be repaired immediately to prevent the bales from getting wet.

Homeowner’s insurance can be a bit tricky because this building method is still gaining traction throughout the US, and not all insurers are familiar with its benefits.

Hubbell & Hubbell on the Frontlines of Straw Bale Construction Education:

States like California have made huge leaps with the permitting process, thanks to people like our very own Principal Architect Drew Hubbell, who has been on the frontline of this construction method’s education. In 1997, he created a source book educating building officials about state law permitting straw bale construction and designed a 500 SF guesthouse in Borrego Springs, cutting the ribbon as the first permitted straw bale structure in San Diego County.

Drew and the Hubbell & Hubbell team continue to push forward time and time again, having designed and received permits for about 50 straw bale buildings since this guesthouse was built, including the first commercial straw bale building and first permitted ADU in the County.

Designed by Hubbell & Hubbell using the innovative Perfect Block Insulated Composite Concrete Form (ICCF) system, this San Diego ADU was completed in 2024 and recently had professional photos taken by TruVUE Productions. Built in approximately 11 months, the three-bedroom, two-bath unit was envisioned as both a premium rental opportunity and a future home for the owners themselves.

Planned with long-term comfort and flexibility in mind, the ADU features high ceilings, expansive west-facing windows for abundant natural light and coastal breezes, a built-in electric fireplace, and a private outdoor shower. The layout was carefully positioned at the rear of the property to preserve privacy between the main residence and ADU, while mature trees create a serene outdoor setting with filtered light and shade.

Located near several hospitals and universities, the solar-powered, fully furnished unit offers an ideal mid- and long-term housing solution for traveling nurses, medical professionals, and academics.

Perfect Block technology offers a wide range of performance advantages, including exceptional energy efficiency, superior fire resistance, enhanced sound insulation, improved indoor air quality, and the ability to withstand extreme weather conditions far beyond traditional wood or metal stud construction. This resilience factor is increasingly important in California, where wildfires are abundant.

Over the years, Hubbell & Hubbell has designed dozens of ADUs throughout San Diego County, integrating green building strategies such as passive solar design, reclaimed materials, natural ventilation, and high-performance building systems.

We believe ADUs have the power to provide flexible, inspiring living spaces while contributing to more sustainable communities. Seeing these projects come to life — especially through innovative technologies like Perfect Block — is always incredibly rewarding for our team.

At Hubbell & Hubbell Architects, Earth Day is more than a moment on the calendar—it’s a reminder of the responsibility we carry every day as designers of the built environment.

This Earth Day, we are proud to reaffirm and expand our commitment to sustainable, thoughtful, and forward-thinking architecture. Our approach continues to evolve around one central idea: design must give back more than it takes. That means prioritizing energy efficiency, reducing material waste, embracing adaptive reuse, and integrating nature into the very fabric of our projects.

From early concept sketches to final construction details, sustainability is not an afterthought—it is the foundation. We continue to explore low-impact materials, passive design strategies, and innovative systems that reduce carbon footprints while enhancing comfort, beauty, and performance.

Sustainability is not only technical—it is human. It’s about creating environments that support wellbeing for generations to come. It’s about designing spaces that breathe, adapt, and endure.

As we look ahead, Hubbell & Hubbell Architects is doubling down on collaboration with clients, engineers, builders, and communities to push what’s possible in environmentally conscious design. The challenges facing our planet are significant, but so is the opportunity to build better.

This Earth Day, we invite you to join us in celebrating progress, rethinking possibility, and committing to a more sustainable future—one project, one decision, and one design at a time, because the future isn’t something we wait for. It’s something we build.

From hands-on beginnings in the 1960s growing up on his family’s land in the rolling hills of Santa Ysabel, California, Drew Hubbell built a lifelong foundation in artful construction rooted in nature. He shaped adobe, welded steel, installed mosaic tile, and crafted whimsical structures alongside his 3 siblings and parents on what is nicknamed “Hubbell Hill,” now called The Ilan-Lael Foundation.
Formally trained across the U.S. and Europe, with design influences shaped by travels through Asia and East Africa, Drew’s work reflects a deep respect for place and environment.

From an imaginative underwater home concept off Windansea Beach for his first commission to early career experience in historic preservation under Milford Wayne Donaldson from 1988 to 1994, Drew’s approach blends innovation with tradition.
In 1995, Drew decided to put his skills and knowledge to work in tandem with his father’s, and he set up Hubbell & Hubbell Architects as a small architecture firm with a practice rooted in sustainable design, craftsmanship, and a lifelong connection to the land. James passed away in 2024, but the legacy of Hubbell craftsmanship continues.

Now 30 years into his practice, Drew continues to advance the boundaries of sustainable design, exploring innovative building systems and materials—from straw bale and insulated composite concrete forms to high-performance foam core sandwich panels. He has extensive experience in commercial and non-profit designs as well as some tribal projects, and has a focus on unique residential projects. The firm approaches each design as a collaborative, creative process—merging architecture, art, and ecology into spaces that feel both timeless and deeply connected to place.

Today, the family tradition is carried forward. Drew’s son, Dylan, is working at the architecture firm while his other son, Connor, is a full-time artist and caretaker at the Ilan-Lael Foundation.

Set above nine sweeping acres in the Highland Hills neighborhood of Ramona, California, this newly completed 2025 custom residence by Hubbell & Hubbell offers a rare blend of timeless design and enduring craftsmanship. The 2,828 SF ranch-style estate draws inspiration from Tuscan and Mediterranean elegance, set against a backdrop of panoramic vistas that stretch endlessly across the landscape.

Inside, a sense of quiet grandeur unfolds. Stunning cathedral ceilings rise above exposed wood beams, while soft natural light pours through thoughtfully placed skylights. Walls of stacked windows capture the surrounding beauty, framing each view like a living work of art.

The open-concept living area invites effortless gathering, while a two-car garage—complemented by a detached garage and shop—provides ample space for hobbies, storage, and creativity. Designed with both connection and quiet in mind, the home offers abundant room to come together, as well as peaceful corners to rest and recharge.

Constructed with insulated composite concrete form blocks—renowned for their exceptional structural integrity and impressive four-hour fire rating—the home is as resilient as it is beautiful. ICCF, built by “Perfect Block,” also has high insulating qualities, sound-proofing, and is 700% stronger than wood stud frame construction. 100% of EPS in the blocks is recycled and 87% of each block volume is recycled EPS.

True to the Hubbell & Hubbell philosophy, the home dissolves the boundary between indoors and out, inviting nature in and creating a serene, sanctuary-like atmosphere that feels both grounded and elevated.
