For some it may be the lack of bulk food stores. For others, perhaps the price of zero-waste products. Or how about living a zero waste lifestyle with roomies that aren't on board?

For me? It's the constant battle that goes on in my head. I often find myself trying to justify being wasteful. I could be out for a walk, passing by a market and realize that I could use some groceries. But I don't have my reusable bag with me. The angel on my left shoulder tells me to go tomorrow, but the devil on my right says, "It's just one plastic bag."

While I try to strike a healthy balance, I often question my dedication to living a reduced waste lifestyle if I keep making exceptions.

What helps me stay motivated is looking at my trash bin on trash day. Before embarking on my journey, my trash bin would always be full. Now when I look at it, it's barely half filled.

Despite my weak moments and there are plenty of them, if my trash bin still has even a bit of space left on trash day, then I know I'm still making a difference. Some weeks are definitely better than others though.

What are your zero-waste hurdles?

Hopefully by now we all know to recycle, compost and use reusable items, but here are some things that probably hasn't crossed your mind.

Using cold/warm water instead of hot. Water heating is the second largest consumer of electricity in a household. By dialing down the temperature of the water, you can save yourself some money and reduce your footprint. So rethink those hot showers and consider switching to a cold or warm water setting for your laundry.

Buying local and in season. Out of season produce are transported from other states and even other countries. If you aren't jonesing for something in particular, go with the in season items. Not only are they more eco-friendly, but they are much fresher and tastier!

Unplugging idle electronics. Most modern electronics are pretty efficient when managing electricity when idled or off, but they may still consume some electricity. It wouldn't hurt to unplug items that don't see much use.

Comment below some other not-so-obvious eco-friendly tips.

What is Thor without his hammer? Or King Arthur without Excalibur. In the battle against single-use, we need our weapons. So what are yours? ⚔️

For us? The shampoo bar, dish washing block, unpaper towels and bamboo toothbrush have been our go-tos.

With the lockdown still in place and our zero-waste staples temporarily benched, it's not surprising that we are feeling a bit guilty. 😰

While guilt is typically viewed as a harmful emotion, it can be very motivating as well. Sometimes you have to tell your guilt to pipe down and that it's ok we couldn't use our refillable cup today. Other times we can use it to take action. But there are also times where your guilt just won't shut up and starts to take over.😈

And that's when it becomes an issue.

Fortunately our friend, , has written up an excellent article on coping with environmental guilt. 🤩

While there's no right or wrong way to do zero-waste, here are a few things to consider on your unique journey.

1) Don't discard all your plastics. Plastic has been painted as the number one enemy of zero-waste, but it's shouldn't be. Plastic is a solid material. Reuse your plastic items as much as possible before discard...ahem recycling them.

2) Don't glamorizing zero waste. It's easy to lose sight of what zero-waste means when we are flooded with unrealistic ideas of what zero-waste should look like, i.e. perfect kitchens and bathrooms. Remember zero-waste is about reducing waste. Repeat after me, "Zero-waste is about reducing waste."

3) Don't ignore the supply chain. We tend to only see the final product when shopping that we overlook what goes on behind the scenes; all the fuel required for shipping, all the resources required to produce, etc.

4) Research. With all the green-washing going on, its important to understand what you are actually buying. Big businesses all want a piece of the eco-pie, they are willing to slap whatever buzzwords to get you to buy. Sometimes these words don't mean what you think they do. We have a quick breakdown of common keywords in our glossary. Link in bio. .spruce

What are some other zero-waste mistakes that we may not be aware of?

“I don't want your hope. I don’t want you to be hopeful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I do everyday...I want you to act as if the house is on fire. Because it is.” -⁣

If we keep pretending things are fine, we will eventually burn with the house. We need to take action! @ San Francisco, California

Phone broke? Time for an upgrade. Shoes are worn out? I’ll just get a new pair. Tore a hole in my jeans? Let’s hit the mall!⁣

It’s no surprise why repair shops are so scarce these days. It’s easier to replace something than to fix it. We are living in a disposable society.⁣

The worst part is many companies are capitalizing off this. They are purposely making lower quality items with the expectation that you will eventually need to replace it.⁣

So where does all discarded items go? ⁣
Well at best, they end up being recycled but if not they most likely end up in landfills. Keep in mind, plastic isn’t the only material that takes many lifetimes to degrade. Most metals and glass do not degrade. This means if they aren’t properly recycled, than they will continue to exist somewhere.⁣

Annie Leonard said it best “There’s no such thing as ‘away.’ When we throw anything away it must go somewhere.”

It’s not Christmas or Thanksgiving, there’s no presents or turkey/tofurkey dinners. And sadly, to many it’s just another day.

Celebrating Earth Day is important because it serves as a reminder of how beautiful, yet fragile our world is. Seriously, our world rocks! And we need to work to keep it that way.

So take this time to teach our children how they can be better residents of the Earth. Educate them on why it’s important not to be wasteful. Inspire them to be badass eco-warriors.

Do something good for the Earth. Evaluate your daily routines and see how you can be a bit more green. Maybe start a small garden. Or watch some environmental documentaries – check out “A Plastic Ocean.”

While we are distancing ourselves from each other, let's not forget to distance ourselves from single-use items.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, single-use items are making a huge comeback. Many cafes are not allowing refillable cups anymore. In some cities plastic bag bans are placed on hold. More and more takeout containers are being used because we can't dine in. And disposable masks and gloves are everywhere.

It's understandable to take care of yourself first, but we also need to be mindful. Let's not undo all the efforts that has already gone into reducing single-use items.

With our patented technology, supermarkets will never have to wrap fruits in plastic any longer. We would like to introduce the...Fruit Blankie. Thanks to modern innovation we were able to create a protective shell for fruits that do not rely on any plastic what-so-ever. The shell comes in many colors, molds perfectly to a variety of fruits, is water resistant and will keep germs out. So keep your fruits safe with a Fruit Blankie. @ San Francisco, California

I’m sorry for all the times I didn’t recycle because I was lazy.
I’m sorry for all the plastic straws and bags that I’ve used. I didn’t know better.
I’m sorry for all the people who think climate change is make-believe. I should have made my voice louder.
I’m sorry to our future generation for the mess we leave. I could have done more.
I’m sorry planet Earth. I let you down.

I promise, I will do better.
