It’s lake season.

That unmatched time of year. Whether you are finding peace at your camp, or celebrating on the wine trail. Having a morning coffee on the dock, or fishing late into the evening. Kayaking, padding, boating, or just setting up a chair on the lawn to watch the sunset.

There is nothing quite like summer in upstate New York. You just have to be there to understand.

Iceland is one of the most active landscapes on Earth, and one of my favorite places to study.

Eruptions, earthquakes, and faulting are constantly reshaping it, and all of that shows up in the terrain.

So even when you’re looking at a still map, it’s not really still. The landscape is always moving.

Once you see it that way, it’s hard to unsee.

Relief maps aren’t accurate in the way most people think.

They’re deliberately exaggerated so the terrain is visible at a given scale. Without that, even the largest features on Earth would appear nearly flat.

This isn’t distortion for the sake of it. It’s a tool. By increasing the vertical scale, we can actually see patterns in the landscape that would otherwise disappear. Those patterns are what allow us to understand how the land was formed.

Even a relief map of Kansas tells a story. With no exaggeration, it looks like a pancake. But with a bit of added relief, you can see how the landscape has been carved by water flowing off the Rocky Mountains. Incredibly detailed patterns emerge in shaded relief that are invisible at ground level. It’s all about perspective.

Whether you’re looking at Mount Everest or the Great Plains, the same principle applies. There is structure at every scale if you know how to look for it.

Finding yourself starts with a map.

It reminds you how far you’ve come, how small you are, and how much there’s still to see. Every contour and coastline is a story told from above, a reminder that perspective changes everything.

Maybe it’s the place you grew up, or the place that changed you forever. Hang it where you can see it. Remember what it felt like to stand there, and how the world looked from that point on.

Perspective is everything. See the world differently.
