🧠 Brain Health & Longevity: What Every Professional Woman Needs to Know in Midlife

Women in their 40s and 50s are leading teams while navigating brain and hormonal changes that affect focus, memory, and resilience—especially during perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause.  

💡 Research by Lisa Mosconi, program director of CARE at Wellcome Leap, shows that 80% of women in their 40s experience cerebral hypermetabolism, where glucose—the brain’s fuel—becomes less efficient. PET scans show a 20% drop in brain glucose metabolism from perimenopause to post-menopause, linked to fluctuating estrogen.

💡 Why does this matter? Estrogen regulates glucose metabolism, cognitive function, and emotional stability. As women become more resistant to estrogen (around age 43), brain focus, memory, and stress response can be disrupted, especially as the HPA axis—the brain’s stress system—becomes dysregulated.

🌿 The Silver Lining: In my work with Elissa Epel at UCSF Osher Center for Integrative Health, I’ve seen that longer exposure to natural estrogen is linked to longer telomeres, a marker of slower aging. One accessible way to support longevity and longer telomeres? Meditation and stress regulation. These practices reduce cortisol and calm the HPA axis, supporting brain health and vitality.
