I'm not seeing much discussion of the propositions in the upcoming election. I have to admit I tend to wait pretty late in the season to start looking closely at how I'll vote. But I just became aware of the realtors, MAGA and Billionaire-funded attacks on non-profits and rent-control in the state.
One of these comes as an attack on the AIDS Healthcare Foundation after they funded Proposition 33. All prop 33 does is remove limits on rent-control measures that cities can consider. Cities would still have to take action. But just the threat of the possibility rent-control could be expanded (in a state with over 4 million living at poverty levels and almost 200,000 houseless) caused a consortium of realtors associations to spend almost $80 million to defeat prop 33.
On top of that they authored prop 34, spending another almost $30 million, as a direct attack on AIDS Healthcare Foundation, which if passed could result in restricting any political spending or funding of election propositions by non-profits. It pretends to be about prescription drugs and protecting patients, but it is entirely funded by real-estate interests as a retaliation against the authors of prop 33, who have only raised a $1million to defend themselves.
Over $100 million spent by realtors on just two propositions in an attempt to protect their profits and their stranglehold on housing, all while vilifying a non-profit for advocating politically for their constituents and the struggling renters in this state.
If anything we need a laws to prevent the super-wealthy from pouring unlimited money into state elections. The MAGA, tech bros and real-estate oligarchs are trying to take over the state and San Francisco, and spending a lot of money to do it. These are the people creating the doom loop narrative about homelessness in CA, all while insuring that it will continue to get worse.
Is anyone I know following any of this?
