We’re pleased to share Mark Cavagnero Architect, the first monograph from Mark Cavagnero.

Highlighting fifteen projects across our thirty-eight years of practice, the book offers a look at work that has helped shape San Francisco Bay Area’s civic, cultural, recreational, and educational landscape.

Grounded in the Modernist tradition, our work is guided by our core values: volume and light, site and community, and place and time in responding to the specific programmatic needs of each of our clients.

Celebrating the ribbon cutting of the Learning Resource Commons at !

Designed as a central hub for academic life, the new Wang & Qu Family Learning Resource Commons brings together the library’s collections, digital media center, TV/recording studio, writing center, tutoring center, collaboration spaces, gaming studios, and librarian offices into one cohesive and welcoming space.

As shared by President Jennifer Taylor-Mendoza, this project reflects a broader commitment to modernization, one that goes beyond aesthetics to create an environment where students feel comfortable, capable, and inspired to do their best work.

We’re honored to support West Valley College in shaping a dynamic and welcoming environment that encourages student success.

Thank you to our collaborators who helped make this milestone possible: , , , , , Forell/Elsesser Engineers, , O’Mahony & Myer, , and many more!

A behind-the-scenes look at the construction of the new Gene Friend Recreation Center. Screen installation is coming along smoothly, and we’re looking forward to completing the project later this summer!

The Gene Friend Recreation Center project will replace the old facility with a bright, modern hub. It adds 50% more space to serve the needs of children, families, and seniors in the vibrant SoMa neighborhood. The 25,000 square foot center includes a gymnasium with two full-size basketball courts surrounded by expansive windows for natural light, as well as an inviting new entry on Harriet Street.

The design features a welcoming reception area, a modern exercise area, and two multi-purpose rooms, one of which opens onto the new exterior playground, creating a safe and protected area for supervised play. Additional outdoor amenities in the dense urban area include a picnic area and sport court, all complemented by new landscaping and lighting.

Thank you to , , , and all our collaborators for bringing this project to life.

We’re delighted to announce that Arc Institute is the winner of the 2025 American Architecture Award!

Nestled within the Stanford Research Park, the new home for Arc Institute converted a spec-built office building into a warm and welcoming environment, filled with natural light and connected to nature. Designed to accommodate autonomous and cross-disciplinary research programs, the building provides highly flexible, state-of-the-art laboratory and breakout spaces in an inspiring, human-centric setting. The program includes over 58,000 SF of ‘wet lab’ research space along with ‘dry’ research labs, offices, and meeting spaces to complement bench research. Supporting these lab spaces, a welcoming lobby and new garden terrace is provided along with a new public café to foster and encourage collaboration and promote staff well-being.

Construction is underway at the St. Ignatius College Preparatory New Learning Commons! Rebar and concrete are being placed at the first floor of the new 142,000 gsf building.

The New Learning Commons will add new and remodeled flexible educational, collaborative and support spaces to enhance traditional, immersive, and project/technology-based learning. The facility, which will create a new main entrance to the campus, will be contiguous with and extend northward from the existing main academic building (pictured in the background) to create a singular, cohesive learning complex.

Marcus Hall is conceived as a flexible learning and production environment for teaching electronic media capture, editing and broadcast. The goal of the project was to offer a flexible, transparent and universally accessible building for students. The ground floor houses highly controlled environments and acoustically sensitive spaces dedicated to specialized content creation, and the upper three floors are comprised predominantly of classrooms and offices. The envelope consists of architectural cast-in-place concrete, insulated metal wall panels, and a low-energy aluminum curtainwall. These systems have been strategically shaped to efficiently mitigate the marine micro-climate specific to the ocean facing the SFSU campus area.
