I used to think creativity was mostly about what came out at the end.

The story. The workshop. The card deck. The finished piece.

But the older I get, the more interested I am in what happens to us while we’re making something.

We discover what we think. We surprise ourselves. We bump up against the places where we want to quit or get everything exactly right. We practice trusting our instincts. And somewhere in all that creating, we change a little, too.

Maybe that’s one of the best reasons to keep making things. 💖

There’s a particular kind of connection that happens when women stop making small talk.

When we’re willing to share what’s actually going on beneath the polished answers and the “I’m fine,” something shifts. We recognize ourselves in each other. We laugh. We get honest. And often, we leave knowing ourselves a little differently than we did before.

That’s one of my favorite parts of the Speaking to What Matters Retreat. With no more than seven women, this is intentionally a small, intimate experience where your story has room to be heard.

I’d love for you to be one of those women this November. 💖

This summer, I joined a 40-day creative challenge. My goals were to finish my card deck, write in my journal for 20 minutes every day, and complete four blogs.

I finished my card deck (yay!), I filled every single page of my notebook (woohoo!) and I started a couple blogs but didn’t quite finish. So yeah, I didn’t cross every t or dot every i—literally or figuratively—and, as it turns out, taking on a 40-day challenge during the summer didn’t always feel like the most brilliant move. But it did help me stay committed to my writing practice, and I’m so grateful I did.

Most mornings, I used a writing prompt from my card deck and let it lead me to the page. Sometimes, when I was in Maine, I just sat on my deck and read instead. See above. Ha! The piece below grew out of one of those journal entries. It's a letter from my wiser self to the part of me that gets in my own way. Maybe you can relate.

What happens when you give yourself permission to step away from everything you’re carrying and make space for you?

For a day and a half in Stinson Beach, we slow things down. We write, reflect, move, share, laugh, and listen. Not to fix ourselves or figure everything out, but to hear what may have been difficult to hear in the busyness of everyday life.

This is the heart of Speaking to What Matters, and I would love to welcome you into our small circle this November. 💖

So much energy can go into trying to get it right. Saying the right thing. Showing up the right way. Being the version of ourselves we think the moment requires.

But what might become possible if we noticed that pressure instead of automatically obeying it?

Awareness gives us a choice. We can loosen our grip on who we think we should be and make a little more room for who we actually are. 💛

Over the past three years, since sharing my own story, I’ve had the privilege of leading this overnight retreat a few times a year. Again and again, I’ve seen what can happen when women give themselves this kind of space—to go beneath the surface, listen deeply, and reconnect with themselves, their truth and their wisdom.

I would love for you to experience that, too. 💖

Join me for the Speaking to What Matters Retreat, November 13–14th in beautiful Stinson Beach, California. Together, we’ll step away from the noise of everyday life and make space to listen, reflect, write, connect, and remember what matters most.

Save $100 with early bird pricing through September 4th.

So much can change when we stop telling ourselves the version of the story we think we should tell and start getting curious about what’s really there. 💛

Sometimes that means sitting with a memory a little longer. Asking a harder question. Noticing what we’ve left out. Or allowing ourselves to say something out loud that we’ve only ever carried quietly.

Our stories help us understand where we’ve been, but they can also show us what we need, what we value, and where we want to go next. ✨

There is courage in knowing your story. And there is connection in allowing yourself to be known. 🌿

Sometimes we don't know what we think or feel until we give ourselves permission to write it down. ✍️

That's one of the reasons I created Writing to What Matters.

This isn't a class about becoming a "better writer." It's about creating the space to listen more deeply to yourself, uncover the stories that have shaped you, and find the words that feel honest and true.

Week by week, we'll write together, reflect together, and share in a small, supportive circle where your voice is welcomed exactly as it is. 💛

Whether you're dreaming of writing a memoir, telling your story on your website, or simply wanting to understand yourself more fully, I'd love to have you join us.

If you've been waiting for the right time to begin, perhaps this is it. 🌿
