CMG Landscape Architecture

CMG Landscape Architecture CMG is a mission-oriented landscape architecture studio in San Francisco, CA. We actively engage the public and encourage discourse and sharing ideas.

In 2000, three friends got together and launched CMG Landscape Architecture, an urban design and landscape architecture practice based on invention, creativity, and craft. As a mission-based studio, CMG works to increase social and ecological wellbeing through artful design. At the heart of the practice is attention to public space, how the built environment shapes human interaction, and the way i

nnovation can foster a thriving natural world. Everything we do is predicated on connecting people with each other and with their environment. CMG has earned national recognition and numerous awards for merits in design, social impact and environmental stewardship. Bringing proven value to clients and projects, our long-standing relationships with institutions, community groups, local governments, park conservancies, developers and designers is a testament to our dedication. From Cleveland to Seattle, to our home in the Bay Area, CMG has made a positive impact within landscapes, cities, and the profession. CMG works on a wide range of initiatives, project scales and types, with the philosophy that all of our work accrues as the single overarching project of improving the public realm of our cities. CMG leads community-based design processes for street life and public space planning. We address the issues of sustainability through climate change mitigation and urban resiliency with strategies for sea level rise at waterfront parks, drought-tolerant landscapes and carbon sequestration initiatives. We creatively approach urban ecology through district-wide stormwater management systems and habitat value creation. Each project is distinct, designed for a specific place and shaped by passion and craft. CMG’s team consists of three dozen landscape architects and designers, led by six principals with diverse perspectives and shared values. We are located in the heart of downtown San Francisco — the city that is, in many ways, the overarching master project of our two decades.

CMG is working with the City of Santa Cruz to lead a multidisciplinary team on the Jessie Street Marsh Wetland Enhancement and Trail Project.

The design will expand and restore nearly one acre of wetland habitat, improve flood management, and create new public access through an ADA-accessible interpretive trail. By enhancing habitat value, removing contaminated soils, improving drainage, and providing a welcoming space for the community, this effort will transform Jessie Street Marsh into a healthier and more resilient landscape for people and wildlife.

This is one of four projects CMG is currently working on with the City of Santa Cruz.

Highlights from our annual CMG Retreat — exploring the Filoli Historic House + Garden and visiting the recently-completed first phase of Flood Park!

The Flood Park project team led us through the site, showing off the new multi-use sports fields, sports courts, walking paths, grilling and picnic areas, and their skills on the pump track. Construction of Phase 2 of the park is scheduled to wrap up this Spring!

We value this time together — sharing reflections on community, connection, creativity, art, challenges, change, and growth.

Cityside Park is a signature part of the 300 acres of parks and open space CMG has envisioned for Treasure Island. The waterfront park spans the western edge of the island, serving as a neighborhood amenity for residents, as well as a regional destination for San Francisco and the larger Bay Area community.

The 6-acre first phase of the park opened in September and connects the neighborhood with the Treasure Island Ferry Terminal, the gateway to Treasure Island from San Francisco. This southern entry point welcomes visitors with a coastal strand garden – filled with meandering paths, native coastal bluff species, and furnishings salvaged from trees from Yerba Buena Island. The Great Lawn provides a central gathering and event space anchored by the “Canopy of Sky," an ethereal art installation by Ned Khan that reveals and amplifies wind, light, and sky.

When complete, the park will include a total of 24 acres set within three additional rooms that will include a diversity of activities and experiences. Learn more about Cityside Park at https://www.cmgsite.com/places/cityside-park/

Positioned at the historic heart of campus, the Computing and Data Science Building (CoDa) is designed to promote collaboration and innovation. A series of social spaces encourage people to gather and linger, while allowing for the heavy pedestrian and bicycle circulation of a campus environment.

CoDa carefully integrates several large heritage trees that anchor the site and connect the design to the historic oak groves that are iconic to the Stanford landscape. The landscape weaves connections between new and existing buildings through and around native oak trees. Garden courtyards and seating nooks provide a variety of experiences and functional environments for the building’s visitors, students, and faculty.

The new addition to the Stanford campus contributes to the continued active pedestrian corridor across the university. The project introduces a new kind of academic open space — an interdisciplinary hub for computation and data research at a prominent and important social site on campus.

Coyote Point Vision Plan creates a framework for a regional destination for current and future generations. Developed in collaboration with San Mateo County staff and public input, CMG undertook an in-depth analysis to understand the existing social, physical and natural resources of the park, developing a basis for a revamped park with enhanced organization and programming.

The Vision Plan creates a clearer identity for visitors, revenue opportunities with new experiences and a more ecologically resilience future through strategy around sea level rise challenges. It also provides an operationally feasible array of programming and improvements that can serve the immediate community and region through identifying existing and potential uses becoming of each zone’s character.

The latest phase of the Gateway of Pacific campus (GOP 5) in South San Francisco adds to the robust amenities on campus with the introduction of a multi-use sports court and sculpture garden. The site design takes advantage of the synergy between indoor and outdoor spaces and connects to the lower campus with a series of terracing stone seating elements and grand stairway.

In total, 610 tons of Indiana Limestone were installed at GOP 5 to create a series of unique and dynamic social spaces. The design reinforces CMG’s vision to create outdoor spaces that are idiosyncratic but collectively work together to connect people with each other and with nature.

In June, San Mateo County Parks celebrated the grand opening and completion of Flood Park's Phase 1!

The first phase of the comprehensive renovation upgrades the 21-acre park with new infrastructure and redesigned amenities with a light and respectful design touch – preserving urban ecology through historical tree preservation while creating new recreational and social programming.

Phase 1 includes the opening of a new pump track, multi-use sports fields with artificial turf, basketball courts, tennis and pickleball courts, sand volleyball courts, walking paths, and grilling and picnic areas.

During the ceremony, the county also broke ground on Phase 2. Read more at https://www.cmgsite.com/practice/news/flood-park-celebrates-phase-1-opening/

Spanning 2-acres between Market Street and Van Ness Avenue, Brady Block grows downtown San Francisco’s public realm through a fine-grained urbanism approach.

The multi-building, mixed-use, residential project revitalizes the dense, urban neighborhood and improves the walkability and city circulation by re-knitting the site into its surrounding context and creating active street edges. In addition to the public realm improvements, the block includes private spaces for the residential tenants, including sunken gardens, private courtyards, roof decks with extensive planting, and walkable mews.

Designed with the community’s direction to prioritize nature, De-Pave Park reflects the optimistic vision for a waterfront that increases its ecological richness with sea level rise and creates a place where people can experience the natural world in transition.

By restoring nature and engaging the Bay, De-Pave Park will be an ecologically productive landscape for native wildlife and a recreational and educational resource for the community.

De-Pave Park creates 21-acres of new tidal marshes and wildlife habitat within a dense urban area with public access - which includes pedestrian trails, observation points that are accessible to people of all physical abilities, a promenade running the length of the park, interpretive educational signage and programs, beach access, tide pools, and picnic areas and nature play.
