When you are a young artist, there are a handful of amazing people who really move you and change your life. They help you become you.
I was blessed almost 20 years ago to meet Michel Biehn. For me, he was one of these life-changing influences. To this day, when I am trying to imagine a creative solution to a visual problem, I ask myself: what might Michel do?
Michel was larger than life. Creativity surged through every inch of him ( and he was 6'5"), and he saw magic and life force in every object he included a space. He created gorgeous objects too. ( At one point, he was making huge decorative pillows with surfaces covered buttons and other tiny objects. They were sculptural pillows. One depicted a desert with a tiny oasis, and a camel!)
Michel Biehn had a shop in the legendary antique mecca in Provence, Isle sur la Sorque. His shop, Maison Biehn, was a must see destination! He wrote many books on Provencal cooking, textiles, and other subjects that provoked his passions. He worked as a designer ( although he would cringe at that term. He didn't like the words "designer" and "interior design". He preferred "architect," and as a joke, he had "House of Magician" on his business card.
About 15 years ago, Michel moved to Fez and created another legendary place, a boutique hotel - Les Jardin des Biehn- [email protected]" rel="ugc" target="_blank">[email protected] . His wife and children continue his legacy there..His beautiful daughter, Jeanne, continues in his foot steps, working with Nepalese weavers to produce one of a kind scarves.
Michel's passing is a great sadness to me. He was so inspiring and loved. I hope this post inspires everyone to think soulfully and out of the box and take risks because nothing is permanent. Michel created beauty everywhere he looked ...he was a magician.
