Excited to announce that I'm joining the 2015-16 Emerging Arts Professionals - SFBA fellowship cohort! This fellowship, along with my participation in the California Association of Museums learning collaborative on engagement, means my mind is churning with all sorts of museum related things. Stay tuned for more.

The good news: "the survey documented a significant movement toward gender equality in art museums. Women now comprise some 60 percent of museum staffs, with a preponderance of women in the curatorial, conservation and education roles that can be a pipeline toward leadership positions."

The bad, but not surprising, news: "the survey found no such pipeline toward leadership among staff from historically underrepresented minorities. Among museum curators, conservators, educators and leaders, only 4 percent are African American and 3 percent Hispanic."

"Museums don’t have a great track record on issues of race. Race has emerged as the most popular topic in the museum community that we never actually address directly. (We even tend to avoid using the word race, preferring vague terms like “social justice” and “diversity and inclusion.”) Too many museums are blind to how race lives in their collections, exhibition spaces, and public interactions."

In the aftermath of the shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, that claimed the lives of nine parishioners at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, politicians from both sides of the aisle have called for the Confederate flag that flies on the grounds of the South Carolina state Capitol t…

Your summer work schedule is totally open, right? Well, let me help with that. Introducing the Summer Social Experiment, an easy way to dip your toes into the ever expanding pool of social media platforms. Use this quiet(er) time before fall and yearend to test some new stuff out!

First up: Instagram

With summer vacations (in the northern hemisphere, at least), June, July, and August can seem a bit slower, after the rush of membership campaigns at the start of the year and before ramping up for holiday and yearend campaigns in the fall and winter. Which leaves these few months in the middle the…

New programs don't always have to include expensive tech.

"I realize his name tag features a barcode that looks like a book's ISBN code. He's one of the volunteer "books" in the Toronto Public Library's Human Library project. I used my library card to check him out of the Bloor/Gladstone branch. I have to "return" Hibbs in a half-hour so another library user can check him out; you can't just pay a fine for the late return of a human book."

Even as it's entered the digital age, the Toronto Public Library has kept real live people at the heart of its enterprises, keeping the world's biggest library system busy and an crucial part of everyday Toronto life.

Launching a new venture is the best time to start a new course, right? While I'm busy putting the finishing touches on my business plan and getting ready for a conference later this summer, I started a new MOOC (massive open online course) on Future Learn called "Behind the Scenes at the 21st Centur…

"But in the digital age — when the potential audience for any given artwork is a thousand times larger than the crowd that physically walks through a museum’s doors — copyright law and its more zealous readings can actually function to hide artwork."

When it comes to sharing art online, what should take precedence: public access or copyrights?
