Happy Birthday, ! Octavia Butler's visionary works have ignited a global movement and accessible understanding of the urgency of the climate crisis. She continues to inspire change!

This year, the @ M4BL is launching our narrative campaign that aims to, continue the work of Octavia Butler, uplift Black-centered climate solutions to the climate crisis, and build a space for deep learning, experimentation and alternatives.

Black communities have the opportunity to build power to demand climate solutions and climate and environmental justice from politicians, governments and corporations, in order to protect, and defend all Black lives.

If we create space to create these Black community led solutions for the climate crisis, we will find our future generations living in a world that is more just, healthy and stable than the one we live in now. Join us:

Introducing our Black Futures Month special edition of The Tea! For this month’s issue, we wanted to continue to combine our tradition of honoring Black futures with a celebration of love. Though V- Day can sometimes feel commercialized and corny (no shade if you observe it!), we love love and any opportunity to spread it, talk about it, unpack it, feel it, and celebrate it. Love is the foundation of Black q***r liberation, and in this issue, we want to give a snapshot of what that means for many of us. We specifically chose not to focus on romantic love and partnership. Romance culture can often make us feel like we aren’t enough if we don’t have that specific type of love in our lives. Some of us are uncoupled, single, asexual, or aromantic, and not looking for romantic partners—and it’s all valid and doesn’t make us less valuable.

So, in this issue, we are offering tips on how to harness love for yourself, acknowledging the important role of Black q***r visual activists in expanding our understanding of self-love and affirmation and talking about how gathering our chosen family is an act of radical love.

What was missing during State of the Union address?

Not once last night did President Joe Biden mention ending the criminalization of protest, a Trump-era policy that he has allowed to remain in place and has resulted in the imprisonment of many Americans.

19 protestors have been arrested in Georgia under this draconian law that criminalizes basic elements of protest. These harsh domestic terrorism charges are being wielded against those who are fighting for our health and our planet.

We join our friends The Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) in demanding the President to end the criminalization of protests, especially for those protesting for Black lives and environmental justice, our land and water defenders.

Anti-protest laws are rooted in a long tradition of intimidation and control that rob us of self-determination of what’s best for us.

After a Georgia State Patrol Officer violently killed beloved forest defender Manuel Esteban Páez Terán, known to friends and loved ones as Tortuguita, on January 18, The Black Hive – the Movement for Black Lives’ climate and environmental justice initiative issued the following statement.

The Black Hive @ M4BL is clear about “Cop cities” - in Atlanta and elsewhere – have no business existing, especially not in our communities.

SAN FRANCISCO! We’re doing a homegrown Black Trans Joy party next weekend at in the area! Excited to partner with the and to party for a cause!

We will be hosting the National Black Census survey for trans, q***r and non-binary black folks- participants of the survey will receive a gift bag with products, drink tickets and a raffle ticket to win a bag (imported, of course 🤌🏾 💅🏾)

In 2021, The Movement for Black Lives (M4BL) introduced our new Black-centered climate and environmental justice policy platform: the Red, Black, and Green New Deal. Since then, our climate work has expanded into the Black Hive to include the voices of more than 200 organizations representing Black environmental and climate justice leaders, organizers, advocates, and strategists from every region in the United States and the Global Black Diaspora.

The @ M4BL is a cohort of climate and environmental justice experts who use our collective experiences and knowledge to assess how climate change and ecological destruction impact Black communities in the U.S. and globally, and strategize ways to collectively organize for a better, safer future for all Black lives.

M4BL’s climate and environmental justice initiative - the Black Hive - has remixed and reintroduced our Black Climate Mandate, which recommends, among many things, investing in equitable climate solutions that center Black communities' concerns. It outlines the urgency for a Black climate agenda and investment in transformative strategies that protect Black people.

We are far past the time for climate and environmental policies that leave concessions on the table at the expense of Black lives. The Black Hive @ M4BL proposes a comprehensive Black climate agenda that protects Black communities, and by default, all communities.

We’re organizing brilliant, bold, Black climate leadership that holds, heals, and supports Black lives to thrive in the face of climate change. To that end, we endeavor to strengthen engagement and organizing for climate resilience for Black Lives.
