FREE ADVICE
If you are starting your own business and you are ready to name the company consider these things-
1. Don't make it lonnnnnnnggg. And yes, my company is named big girl on a mission and that is very long, but it works for me and I live with the pain of a lonnnggg email address every day. But more importantly if your name is long, the public may not remember and get confused and that means losing customers or clients. No bueno.
2. Don't name it after yourself. Nix the John Doe Plumbing, if you ever go to sell the company the name and reputation is collateral, but who wants to own a company named after someone else? And this goes double for naming a company with initials!! JNR Plumbing is difficult to remember, almost guaranteed that people will get the initials confused and struggle to find your company. Again no bueno.
3. Don't make up a word for your name. You may think you're clever, and you may very well be, but again it goes back to the ease of finding your company information and that usually starts with remembering the name and if it is a made up word...well it's just hard and the public really loves easy. I do know of one company where they made it work, and of course they are super cool and their name reflects that in the blending of two words that reflect who they are, but they are few and far between.
To end this post, I will tell you the worst name I have seen, they went out of business quickly and it happened years ago so I don't think I'll hurt anyone's feelings.
It was a hair salon called "Not Too Shabby Hair".
Not Too Shabby.
Not great, not bad, just not too shabby.
Expectations were low going to that salon.
Any names you have seen that were terrible?
