347-MW Solar Project Breaks Ground Near Houston

A major new solar project is taking shape in Texas as construction begins on the 347-MWDC SunRoper Solar project in Wharton County. Developed jointly by OCI Energy and Israel-based Arava Power Company, SunRoper is expected to begin operations in December 2027 and deliver electricity to the ERCOT grid.

The project is being constructed by WHC, which will serve as the EPC contractor. A Fortune 500 company has also reportedly signed a power purchase agreement for a portion of the project’s output.

Beyond adding new renewable generation, SunRoper highlights the growing importance of partnerships across project development, financing, construction and energy procurement.

With Texas electricity demand continuing to rise, large-scale solar projects like SunRoper can help expand generation capacity while supporting the state’s evolving energy mix.

California Farmers Get a New Path to Solar Energy

California is making it easier for farmers in water-stressed regions to turn unproductive farmland into solar power projects. Assembly Bill 1156, approved by the state Legislature, would eliminate conversion fees for farmers whose land is affected by groundwater restrictions. The bill primarily targets areas in the Central Valley and Central Coast, where declining groundwater supplies are forcing farmers to leave portions of their fields unplanted.

California’s Sustainable Groundwater Management Act is progressively limiting groundwater pumping to address falling aquifer levels, dry wells, and land subsidence. Researchers estimate that up to 900,000 acres of San Joaquin Valley farmland could be left dry by 2040.

Solar offers these landowners an alternative source of income while supporting California’s goal of 100% clean electricity by 2045.

If signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom, AB 1156 could help transform water-constrained farmland into productive clean-energy assets.

India’s coal plants could play a surprising role in scaling solar. India is targeting 292 GW of solar capacity by 2030, but integrating that much solar requires a more flexible power grid.

A Central Electricity Authority (Cea) committee recommends two-shift operation of selected older coal units—shutting them down during peak solar hours and restarting for the evening demand surge.

The proposal identifies 151 coal units totaling 34.5 GW, potentially providing about 24.2 GW of flexible capacity. Why does this matter? Solar creates a steep “duck curve”: midday generation is high, while demand and grid requirements rise sharply after sunset. Flexible thermal plants can help reduce solar curtailment and manage these ramps.

The estimated retrofit cost is around ₹30,200 crore, compared with roughly ₹1.75 lakh crore for equivalent BESS capacity cited by the report.

The transition to renewables, therefore, may depend not only on building more solar—but also on making existing infrastructure more flexible.

New Jersey is making solar power more accessible to renters. Gov. Mikie Sherrill has signed the Garden State Balcony Solar Act, allowing renters to use small, plug-in solar panels on balconies, patios, porches, and other suitable spaces.

The law exempts qualifying systems from certain permitting and utility approval requirements while limiting landlords and homeowners associations from blocking their use. That matters because roughly 36% of New Jersey residents are renters, many of whom cannot install traditional rooftop solar because they don’t own their homes.

Plug-in solar could provide renters with a practical way to generate some of their own electricity and potentially reduce monthly energy bills — without major installation costs or permanent changes to a property. The bigger takeaway: the energy transition is moving beyond rooftops.

Portable solar can help bring clean-energy access to households that traditional solar has often left behind.

The U.S. energy storage market just set a new record. The industry installed 20.2 GWh of energy storage capacity in Q2 2026, bringing first-half installations to 30.8 GWh.

Utility-scale storage has nearly doubled from 88 GWh to 165 GWh in just 18 months, reflecting growing demand for grid reliability, flexibility, and support for rising electricity consumption. The outlook is even stronger. The 2030 forecast has been raised 11.5% to 683 GWh, as deployment continues to exceed expectations.

Arizona led Q2 with 6.2 GWh, while Texas and California added 3.8 GWh and 3.6 GWh, respectively. Importantly, storage is spreading beyond traditional markets. During extreme heat, batteries are increasingly helping supply electricity when demand peaks, supporting reliability and reducing exposure to price spikes.

The message is clear: energy storage is becoming essential infrastructure for America’s evolving power grid.

India’s solar manufacturing boom is facing a new challenge: overcapacity.

Solar module manufacturing capacity has surged to 233 GW, making India the world’s second-largest module manufacturing hub. But factories are operating at only 35–40% utilization, below the 50–65% level generally considered sustainable.

The imbalance is significant: India’s module capacity is nearly 7× its cell capacity and 116× its ingot and wafer capacity, leaving the industry heavily dependent on imported upstream inputs. With another 135 GW of capacity planned or under construction, pressure on margins and returns could intensify, increasing stranded-asset risks for smaller manufacturers.

Exports could help, but U.S. trade barriers have already contributed to a 44–47% decline in exports from their FY2024 peak. The next phase of India’s solar manufacturing journey must focus on upstream integration, technology, R&D, exports, and efficient capacity utilization — not simply building more factories.

China’s solar capacity has officially overtaken coal for the first time — a milestone with an important lesson for India.

China reached 1,286 GW of solar capacity by July 2026, slightly ahead of coal at 1,285 GW. Yet solar generated only about one-eighth of the country’s electricity during the first seven months, highlighting a critical distinction: capacity is not the same as generation.

For India, the comparison is revealing. As of July 2026, India had 164.6 GW of solar capacity, versus 224.2 GW of coal. Renewables are expanding rapidly, with India adding more than 3.1 GW of renewable capacity in July alone.

But coal still dominates actual power generation.

The next challenge is therefore not simply adding renewable capacity. It is increasing clean-energy generation, storage, grid flexibility, and transmission capacity enough to displace coal from the generation stack.

India’s energy transition is accelerating — but the real race has only begun.

U.S. schools are turning to solar—and battery storage is next.

More than 10,800 K-12 schools across the U.S. now use solar, representing 2.4 GW of installed capacity. That’s about 9% of all K-12 schools, with more than 7 million students attending solar-powered schools.

School solar capacity has more than tripled in a decade, helping districts reduce and stabilize energy costs. With K-12 schools spending nearly $8 billion annually on energy, the financial case is becoming increasingly compelling.

California leads with 2,921 solar-powered schools and 895 MW of capacity, followed by New Jersey and New York.

The next growth opportunity is battery storage. Only 155 schools currently have batteries, but that number has risen sharply since 2024.

Solar-plus-storage can provide backup power, peak-demand savings, and greater resilience—making schools not just cleaner, but smarter energy consumers.

Nearly 11,000 U.S. K-12 schools now have a combined 2.4 GW of solar capacity. A new national census finds 155 schools have battery storage, highlighting an opportunity for adding resilience to schools across the country.

• Install and bend EMT, RMC & PVC conduit

• Pull and terminate AC/DC conductors

• Install inverters, disconnects, combiner boxes & electrical equipment

• Perform electrical tie-ins and equipment connections

• Read electrical plans and one-line diagrams

• Troubleshoot solar and electrical systems

• Follow NEC, project plans & safety requirements

• Coordinate with supervisors and other trades
