Fenetre Photography

Fenetre Photography SoCal-based wedding & portrait photography by Audrey Nguyen. Everybody should have a picture of themselves that they love and a favorite with someone they love.

I want to take the picture that your boyfriend keeps in his wallet, that your grandma shows off to her neighbor-for-a-bus-ride, that hangs in a home. I want to photograph the awkward adolescent who has never stepped in front of the lens. The person who hates her smile, who covers his face, who blinks in every picture. I want to photograph the models who have been photographed a thousand times befo

re and still somehow, show them something new about themselves that they haven't yet discovered. Some pictures are only realized under special circumstances. The shot of a couple kissing goodbye, one leg on the platform and the other on the train just before it departs, may only happen once in a lifetime. As much as possible, I try to be deliberate and thoughtful in the ex*****on… luck often takes the reins from there! Coaxing a true laugh out of a camera-shy subject is like winning the lottery. I hit the jackpot every time I get to capture a tearful proud parent or radiant bride on the happiest day of her life. Pictures that both arrest and provoke emotion—these are the pictures I want to take.

This shoot took place almost exactly one year ago, at a particularly low point in the struggle to get on my feet as an independent photographer. I was feeling extremely discouraged and hadn’t been able to set aside any time or energy for personal projects. So when my 22nd birthday rolled around, I was relieved for the excuse to spend an afternoon getting creative with my closest girlfriends.

The theme was originally circus runaways, though some of the “runaways” bit was lost in the ex*****on. There were so many unused props, so much behind-the-scenes sweat that doesn’t show up in the final images. But I won’t soon forget the sight of the girls making bindles from fabric and sticks or Jen preparing bucketfuls of popcorn on the stove. Laura donating her hairstyling talents while Anais looped spools of ribbon around a hula hoop. How I posted a sketch on our event page and by the next day, Lily had turned it into a finished garment. Ellen aghast but as always, a good sport about the atrocities I committed on her brows ;) And everyone looking ridiculous lugging insanely heavy steamer trunks across the park in full costume.

So much went into this that no matter how the shots turned out, I don’t think I could look at them without love! This post is dedicated to those ladies for whose friendship (and patience - they’ve only just seen the fruit of their labors) I am so grateful. Here’s to you

I don't always shoot weddings but when I do, there's a 43% chance that the groom is named Mike.
