As the testing landscape continues to change, we keep an eye on trends and stay up to date on those campuses going against the grain. For example, in 2022, MIT announced it would require test scores again, becoming one of the first highly selective universities to make the switch. This article by Jefferey Selingo does a great job of explaining the arguments for and against requiring test scores.

The pandemic — and the mass pivot to a test-optional approach — radically reshuffled college admissions. MIT decided it was done.

The changes to the FAFSA originally slated to take effect this fall for the freshmen college class of 23/24 have been delayed and the revised FAFSA is now expected to roll out next fall. The intent is to simplify the FAFSA and move away from the EFC (Expected Family Contribution) to what they call the SAI (Student Aid Index). However, families should also understand that the changes planned may also impact the determination of the custodial parent for financial aid purposes in a family with divorced parents. The new changes as they now stand will also remove the current discount for those families with multiple children in college at the same time. We will keep our families abreast of these impending changes. In the interim, here is an update from Inside Higher Ed on the status of these impending changes.

Exactly where FAFSA simplification stands is unknown, and concrete guidance for colleges and universities has been scant.

The University of California has finally updated its admissions guidelines to allow high school computer science classes to count as a student’s recommended third year of science (UC category D) for admission to the University. Over five years in the making, the change will have a seismic impact on computer science in the state of California and beyond.

Students deserve to know just how selective certain colleges and universities are when it comes to admissions. We agree with author Jim Jump that some schools' decision to withold admit rates serves to protect institutions rather than students.

Is it ethical to withhold the data? Jim Jump considers the issues.

This is a great read from The Atlantic for parents and students alike. We work hard to remind our students that going to college is about finding the right fit, and it's not all about getting into a name brand university.

He has grades and test scores that I think should qualify him for the Ivy League—but he’s also white and upper-middle-class.

Each year some of our students are interested in becoming nurses. Though there is a nurse shortage on the Central Coast, there isn't a local four year university that offers a BSN in nursing. Nursing programs throughout the state are impacted. However, we counsel our students about the many pathways to becoming a nurse.

Educating more nurses on the Central Coast could help with future health care needs.

We see the benefits of both AP Calculus and AP Stats for different kinds of students, and hope to see admissions personnel reward students who take the course that makes the most sense for their academic and career goals.

New report suggests it does, and admissions association agrees. So do a lot of mathematicians.

UC Berkeley will be forced to cut its student population by about 3,000 students this fall, resulting in the university sending out fewer admissions offers to current seniors.

The court's decision to reject UC Berkeley’s application for a stay in the case means the school will likely need to shrink its student population before the fall semester begins.

In most cases, it's okay if students don't know what they want to study in college! Many colleges and universities, like Dickinson College, University of Colorado Boulder, and Boston College, have programs and centers in place to promote exploration.

A few colleges are encouraging students to slow down and explore before choosing a major, at the very time when others are going in the opposite direction and pushing their undergraduates to lock into a major early on.

The CA State Senate has proposed a plan to drastically reduce out of state students at UC campuses to make room for more in state students. We plan to follow this story closely as so many of our CA students apply to the increasingly selective UCs each year.

As the University of California confronts record demand for admission, lawmakers are considering a plan to cut in half the share of nonresident students to make more room for locals.

The UC system was incredibly selective this year as a result of increased numbers of applications. In this LA Times article, admissions representatives from a variety of UCs weigh in on what they looked for in a cycle without test scores.

University of California admissions officers explain their decisions in a year of record applications that brought widespread heartbreak and some joy for high school seniors competing for spots.
