The manipulation is REAL. The algorithms ARE 100% absolutely manipulating you.
Yes, I watched the movie The Social Dilemma. I found it horrifying - vowing to change my ways and paying more attention to guards against getting sucked down the rabbit hole every time I go on for “work". In conversations about it this week, I have put a lot of thought into how it is useful and dangerous.
In the last four years, the platforms have only picked up steam. Over that time, I have spent time curating my feeds like a feign. Seeking out positive reinforcement and information is one of the beauties of social media and how the algorithm works - to your favor if you hone it.
From a marketing standpoint, I’ve always asked the question - why would I not want to see more things that are specifically in my field of interest? I want content that is of interest to me, that CAN inform my consumer decisions.
I have trained my algorithm to bring me things I care about. Reliable news sources, words from my favorite authors, pictures from my favorite places, food I want to make, and yes, things I’m interested in purchasing populate my feed. I created categories on IG - when in need, for some calming influence, inspiration, or a quick pick me up, it’s at my fingertips. And the more I “play” the system, more of THOSE things come to me.
Because of all this, social media is still one of the best ways to get your word out. In fact, it is highly effective in targeting your market incredibly well by bringing them what we know they are interested in.
We all have to set healthy parameters for ourselves. For example, I NEVER allow myself to impulse purchase off of social media. If I’m interested, I save it and go back at some point. I also am working hard on not going online to just cruise around - to go with intention and set a timer so I don’t get sucked down the hole. Self-regulation is challenging in all things. Social media is this era’s challenge in that regard - no doubt about it.
Just another perspective.
