Pareto’s Law, or the 80/20 rule, states that a few critical causes drive the vast majority of results. 20% of the effort drives 80% of results, so efficiency is achieved by determining and focusing on the right 20%. At Xelay, the practice of having a Day 1 answer pushes us to confirm the objectives for all actions early on, plan and prioritize to complete the most impactful pieces first, and communicate often so our strategies can be adjusted quickly, so that we can be “done” today. When properly applied, the 80/20 rule allows us to allocate time and resources effectively to ensure maximum return per investment.

The fastest way to learn is by doing, not by thinking about it. Many people do non-stop information intake, but more productive approach to learning is through trying, making mistakes, identifying solutions to avoid making those same mistakes in the future, and then trying again with a new approach. At Xelay, we accelerate our team's growth by providing opportunities for them to do, fail and learn, and try again. Only by actually attempting to do it, getting feedback on improved approaches and methods, and trying again differently are skills gained over time.

Although people may logically know feedback is important for growth or learning, it is common for our brains to react and perceive constructive feedback as an attack. However, feedback is a gift from others because they are investing time and effort in our development and trying to help us grow.

Xelayers are stretched daily through challenging projects and applying new skills. When doing new things, it is common to face mistakes and failures. It is common to focus on achieving certain outcomes/goals in order to feel happiness and joy; however, the journey of growth and learning never ends, so this mindset of striving for joy often leads to burnout. Instead, we encourage Xelayers to be present, notice the small happy moments along the way, and focus on their skills and learning. By setting SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound) action items for skills we want to practice and by reflecting on and celebrating small wins, we can feel joy, motivation, and confidence throughout the process of growth and learning.

With large and complicated projects, it can be hard to know where to begin, leading to uncertainty and procrastination. At Xelay, we learn to “open the box”, take a look before jumping into a project, and do a 5-minute task to get started. By doing a 5-minute version, we can reduce our fear of the tasks involved, lower the activation energy required to start a project, feel a sense of progress because we at least got started, and proactively ask for help where needed. Once it is clear what is remaining to be done, a project that seems daunting can quickly become like any other - as long as we "open the box".

When first learning a new skill, people tend to spend a lot of time watching and listening to others. While that does provide some learning, the most impactful way to learn is through doing. At Xelay, we accelerate our team's growth by providing opportunities for them to do, fail, and try doing again. We help them measure their current abilities, assess where to improve, and reflect on their growth as they keep trying. Only through our own experience can we truly learn how to perform a skill and become a master at it.

"Just like growing and progressing, falling down is a part of life." As humans, failures and mistakes are inevitable - nobody's perfect, and there will always be events we can't control. However, what we can control is our approach to the challenges we face. The attitude we have towards falling down dictates where we go from there. Rather than seeing setbacks in life as negatives, we should treat them as opportunities to learn from, challenging our limits and training to bounce back quickly.

Success is not just being smart enough but requires both brains and consistency. Thinking, planning, and strategy are critical to understanding the real goals and prioritizing activity. However, the vast majority of effort in achieving differential and distinctive success is being consistent: a consistent approach, a consistently high level of quality, consistent communications, consistent timeliness, consistent responsiveness, and consistent character. Doing is a process of constantly moving forward and constantly reevaluating and adjusting the direction and strategy. Xelayers learn not to be bound by a perfectionist mindset which prevents efficient teamwork and real progress. By accepting we never have the perfect answer, but we do have our best answer in that very moment, and proactively reaching out to teammates to help, contribute, and advise along the way, we can consistently move projects forward and progress much farther in significantly shorter amounts of time.

Without actually doing the work, no progress is made, even if lots of planning is done. Without planning, progress is disorganized and inefficiently. At Xelay, we emphasize the importance of both: planning out approaches and aligning with teammates helps everyone understand what needs to be completed and how to get it done, while Day 1 answers and 5-minute executions ensure critical 80/20 progress is made immediately and learning fed back into planning as part of a continuous improvement and efficient cycle.

Teamwork makes the dream work! At Xelay, we not only strive to work together to complete tasks efficiently, but also ensure that the quality of the work done by each team member stays consistent, giving us confidence that we can leverage the whole team for any task. Quality teamwork allows transferring work products between a global team and building on what other teammates have done.
