It is with great sadness that we at Hurd La Rinconada Gallery share the passing of Michael Hurd, who died Sunday, April 12, 2026 at the age of 80 following an unexpected illness.

A lifelong New Mexico artist, Michael carried forward a remarkable family legacy, creating a body of work deeply rooted in the landscapes and spirit of the Hondo Valley while also preserving the historic Sentinel Ranch for future generations.

In this time of remembrance and transition, Hurd La Rinconada Gallery will be closed for a period but we look forward to sharing reopening plans. We are grateful for your understanding and your kindness.

Michael’s presence, artistry, and stewardship of this special place will be deeply missed by all who knew him and experienced his work.

Peter Hurd was an American painter, muralist, illustrator and writer, born on February 22nd in Roswell, New Mexico. Hurd was a founding member of the New Mexico Arts Commission. He is best known for his landscapes of the West and portraits of the people who lived there, especially in the area of San Patricio, New Mexico. Hurd was educated at New Mexico Military Institute from 1917-20. He was appointed to West Point Military Academy but resigned in 1923 to peruse an artistic career. He moved to Pennsylvania, where he took classes at Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art and private lessons from artist N.C. Wyeth in Chadds Ford. His studies with Wyeth would change his life in more than one way, as he fell in love with Wyeth's daughter, Henriette, and married her in 1929.
